BFA Acting Class of 2024: Preparation, Prescreens, Auditions, Questions and Support

Hello everyone! My son was recently placed on the waitlist at UMiami. Does anyone know if there is ever much movement there and if there are scholarships offered to WL students? I can’t get a hold of anyone at their financial aid office (they’re working remotely and only taking emails) and the acting director doesn’t seem to know about scholarships. This is a top program and high on his list and would be very tempting if made affordable. With covid-19 we can’t visit any of his schools that he’s narrowed down…about 4 schools…so frustrating and hard to make a decision if we can’t visit the school, classrooms/facilities, etc. Does anyone have experience with this school?

I know there’s one for the MT people, but is a class of 2024 acting final decision forum gonna b a thing?

@2231Starcross3 I don’t think there is yet. Start one plz! We haven’t made a decision yet but hoping to very soon :slight_smile:

Anyone have any information on the BFA Acting program at Brenau University?

Hi everyone! I know most people maybe have already committed to schools already, but I’m going to put this out there in hopes some people are still checking the boards. My son has gotten full tuition scholarships for BFA acting programs at both LIU Post and Brooklyn. He has zoomed with the directors, current students, one class and general zooms about honors program. Is there anyone on here who actually attends either program that could give some added insignt? We haven’t been able to visit (our spring break trip to NYC was cancelled bc of Covid19) and I’m pretty sure we won’t be able to visit, so we’ll have to make a decision sight unseen. It makes me so nervous to do that! He also got full tuition to Utah (trip also cancelled) and accepted/WL at a few others but being in NYC seems to be really appealing to him. If anyone has additional insight to share, please comment or message me. Many thanks!

My kid has been exploring too- lately zooming into classes and meetings at Brooklyn. I don’t know that I have any insight beyond what you’ve gathered, but congratulations! Feel free so message me if you’d like to discuss offline!

Hi there,
I’ve been following all of these discussions but I just made an account so this is my first time posting anything (hopefully I’m doing this right!) … I was wondering if anyone got any recent info on UMN/Guthrie waitlist movement?

@rgal13

We haven’t heard anything beyond one boy getting an offer from the waitlist and accepting.

Ok, thank you!

Hi all, is anyone here familiar with being on the waitlist at SUNY Purchase for BFA Acting? I’m just not sure if I should wait to commit to my other choice before April 30. Does anybody know when they get back to the students on the waitlist? Thank you so much!!

@itskatewest - Waitlists can sometimes go into the summer. In case you didn’t know, you can commit to your other (accepted) choice for the deadline, and then if you do end up getting a spot off the waitlist you can then accept that and decline the other spot. You may lose your deposit, but you don’t want to “wait and see” if you get off the waitlist, because if you don’t commit to your accepted spot, you could lose it. And if you don’t get off the waitlist, then you have no options…

Hi @mommyMT and @TenaciousC, my daughter applied to BFA Acting LIU-Brooklyn and auditioned for them at Unifieds. We’ve received little and inconsistent communication from them, despite various attempts to reach them. She received a financial aid email, saying “looking forward to seeing you in the fall”, and another email from the New Group, asking to reach out with any questions. We’re just trying to find if she’s accepted, waitlisted, or rejected. I understand that they’re in the middle of the pandemic. But I was surprised to ready that you all have been communicating with them. I can’t figure out how to message you all. But could you all either message me or reply as to who to contact there? TIA!!

@dadaspiringactrs I just messaged you!

@dadaspiringactrs We had the same experience last year - took a while (after emailing them) to find out on acceptance to Acting, when others had already received more regular communication. Also kept receiving emails from New Group after kid had declined attending. We attributed it to the program being brand new last year. Good luck!

@dadaspiringactrs I messaged you, too. I sent you the names and email addresses of the directors of the BFA Acting program/New Group.

Hello! I was recently accepted into SUNY Purchase’s BFA Acting program. While I’ve heard fantastic things about it (the rigorous training, amazing professors), I’ve also heard a fair share of negatives about it (harsh teaching styles, heavy workload that consumes students). I am very much looking forward to going, but a part of me is still nervous about the things I’ve heard. If anyone is familiar with Purchase’s program and can share some information with me, I would greatly appreciate it! Thank you!

@boingokathy hey there congratulations!!! I was wondering when you heard from the waitlist?

@artskids , are you still on here to talk about Purchase?

@boingokathy my D is graduating on Friday from SUNY Purchase BFA Acting. You are right about it all. The training is rigorous and intense and most of the professors are wonderful. It is, however, not a warm and fuzzy place to train. The professors and directors can be harsh - they train with the attitude of breaking the bad habits down before building the actor up. The workload is very heavy but I’ve had or have 3 in BFA programs (Acting and MT) and it is not any heavier than my other kids’ programs - it is the nature of the beast.

Do you want to talk to my D? If you private message me your email address, I can have her reach out to you.

@artskids thank you for this info!!! i appreciate it so much
