BFA Acting Pre-Screen and Auditions. Class of 2022 - Sharing!

hi @Jamesdm25 Thanks for the feedback! Hope you were ok with your day at DePaul and BAL for the rest of your auditions

@actingdreams - S will be there. We did the tour a few months ago. Just wondering about parent attendance. Is it ok for parents to come for the info
Or best left to the kids. Maybe somebody from an earlier callback session knows.
@Jamesdm25 - did you audition in NY? Glad to hear they’ve dumped the cut system at callbacks. Probably results in a better day for everyone.

Hi @Atreuh are you in Chicago or nearby? My plan is just to drop my S off at 8 am and will walk in with him to see if we’ll be part of the brief info session. If he has a morning slot, I will just go to a coffee shop nearby or to my office 4 blocks away and do some work and wait around  I would hope that the info session would include the parents. Oddly enough, for UNSCA, we have NYU in the afternoon so they are allowing us to do the parent info session at 9am and return in the evening for his audition (thought that was really nice of them)

I did audition in NYC! It was a really great and relaxed experience.

Anybody at Juilliard today?

@FourStars My D is auditioning tomorrow. How was your experience??

@fourstars we are on the 31st Good luck to you and @ginaf1102 I can imagine how nervous our kids will be but I have a feeling that the auditors know this and can still see past it to see their potential

@ginaf1102 It’s a cool but crazy day with incredibly long odds. My D was not called back. You are probably there now, so you see the deal. But quick summary for Juilliard for anyone. After check-in, those auditioning find out what Hour they are auditioning, roughly, and what slot as in 1st 2nd 3rd 4th. So you can tell you will be between 9:30 and 10:30, or 12 and 1, for example. Did two pieces, they do not provide feedback generally. There are about 7 rooms going simultaneously, with two auditors per room. At 10am there is a long info session for those accompanying. My D was done early, so we did not stay for the whole thing. Around 3pm, they make an announcement that the e-mails and texts are about to be sent with the CallBack info. From what we could see, about 3 people called back that day, out of 175. Some days it is more, there is no formula. Good luck! Just have fun and if you finish early, go do something, don’t just sit there all day! They suggest coming back to the area around 2pm.

Did you say only THREE people (3) were called back out of 175? Or was it a typo and you meant 30?

3 is about right for Juilliard. On campus I think the average is about 10-15, with some days more and some days less. At regionals, sometimes it is 1 or even none who are called back for same day callbacks at Juilliard (seems average at regionals is maybe 5 or 6 from what we have been told). We know people (groups of kids) who audition there every year. We also know about 5 kids who have gone there over the years. My D was worked with in the room during her audition, but not called back. They do ask some for another monologue, song or to take direction. But not everyone. Many kids do their thing and get “thank you” - that is it. It obviously doesn’t mean much though - like I said they worked with my D a long time and did stuff with one of her monologues, but she wasn’t called back. We also know kids who have made it to the final 40 on campus callback twice (two years in a row) and were not admitted. It is a bit brutal. There are other programs which have the same intensity and even a very similar curriculum and level of teaching staff. Hope nobody is too crushed if not called back. It is super brave to put yourself out there. And, of course, thrilling if you are called back!

Wow. I knew that only 40 or so make it to callback weekend, but I didn’t know the same day callback numbers were so tiny! Very helpful to know!

@bfahopeful - you say there are kids who go every year - isn’t there a limit on the number of times you can apply - or have they changed that? I thought it used to be 4x was limit

wow @FourStars that sounds like an experience with a ton of people there. I think we all should treat Juilliard like a fun thing to do and if we’re lucky, they invite us back. 3 people out of 175 people is a LOT! omgoodness. This school is a great reminder that our children will end up where they are supposed to be and most of the time they are thrilled about it

we were told that you can only audition twice in a lifetime at our campus visit. Would be interesting to see if things have changed since then

@actorparent interesting. I think the student who was accepted to callback or made it to the 11 pm hour said that there were at least 30 who had made it. I also was told that they accept many who audition at their school early on. I am wondering with all of the ones who have made it that day aren’t automatically invited to the callback weekend. I’m wondering if you receive an email if you’ve been invited to the weekend only AFTER you’ve made it to the callback on your audition day.

So it’s possible you’ve made it to be considered for the weekend.

Thank you for the details!! My S is auditioning on the 6th in SF. I promised him back in 8th grade that he could audition for Juilliard just so he could have the experience! LOL. He has no expectations beyond absorbing the experience. He spoke with a young man who made it to the final round 2 years ago. Julliard is supposedly very good at communicating throughout the process, should you make the final callback. And, they are very warm with the prospective candidates at that point. It is nice to hear that the kids get a time slot. We were at a school last week that went in alphabetical order which was very, very hard on the kids at the end of the line. “A long time on ice” as my son put it! Good luck to all!

Re: Juilliard. It’s possible more than three people arrived later in response to the e-mail, but from within the room, we saw one person for sure, and it looked like two people joined him. He may have been from outside the U.S., he spoke in another language to his father, who accompanied him. He was excited, obviously. On another day, we learned 17 were called back, and then they cut it down to 10. So it really does vary. Go for the experience! You never know!

@toowonderful sorry if I was confusing. I didn’t mean the same kids apply every year. I meant that we happen to know kids who apply one year, and then other kids the next year, etc. You can apply twice at the BFA level and twice at the MFA level. We do know kids who have applied two years in a row.

@actingdreams not everyone with a same day callback (be it the first day or last day of auditions) will make it to the final 40. And, yes, you have to be called back the same day in order to be considered for the final 40. If not asked for a same day callback, you are eliminated. We do know a girl who auditioned at one of their last dates who made it to final 40 (didn’t get in though).
During the parent session the year my D appliied, they said that throughout the process they may give 170 or so same day callbacks and then narrow it down to the final 40 for a 2nd callback. I am sure the number of same day callbacks vary by year. I have also heard the first day of auditions they often call back the most (which seems to be the case this year with a reported 30 called back). However - was not the case when my D auditioned on the first day two years ago. They also told parents that during the same day callback they will interview some kids but it does not mean you are cut if you do not get an interview.

@bfahopeful - Gotcha

My D got a callback!!! OMG I am so excited for her. She is there right now doing all callback stuff. A current student said its like the best masterclass you’ve ever head. Exactly 20 students were called back today (186 auditioned today). That includes BFA/MFA candidates - they are all in it together. Fun tidbit: Annette Benning’s daughter was there today (she was called back too). Annette and I had a moment when our girls got the good news. Break legs to your kiddos!
