hi @theatreloverca thanks for responding! Welcome and thank you for the information!
So,they do give full rides for Tisch. Unfortunately that did not apply to us but it was generous enough where we can most certainly consider it. My S like others have always been concerned about class side however I don’t think it should ever be a problem considering NYU Produce some pretty successful performers. I did not consider asking for more since it was generous and I’m still in disbelief that he was accepted. I think all of these programs have something special. I hope that we can make a decision soon. I believe that my S did not have it on the top of his list because it was more liberal based with 3 days of performance and he went in wanting majority performance. I do however feel like all of this has changed since sitting in on long auditions and having callbacks. It has made a difference. The info sessions were beyond valuable. I can tell you that the director of Tisch was HILARIOUS and we really enjoyed him on audition day. Thank you for responding. I hope to hear about your daughter doing great things soon after graduation
@latinaMTmom - actors from IWU are always in plays in/around Chicago! Sarah Bockel who played Carole King in Beautiful - the Musical, in Chicago (and the national tour) is an IWU grad. =D> (I loved that play!) Best wishes to your S!
@Atreuh that’s fantastic! And thank you so much for sharing that info. We started this process at the beginning of November 2017. Pretty late compared to most. I’ve had to learn a lot…very quickly!! And I still feel like I don’t know much. Lol.
@Latinamom a couple of my sons close friends are freshman’s there. They are highly talented and I’m certain that they had other options. They are really that talented! If you want to inbox me, maybe I can connect you all after you accept. If you’re in IL, you can’t go wrong right now. It’s not NYC but there is a LOT of film, TV and theatre work here (It seems like a tv show is shooting on my block once per month these days). You can’t go wrong. Just by looking at the kids who are entering in from the past few years, I have no doubt that IWU will be in demand for their program. The faculty seems amazing as well. Please keep us posted. Regarding CMU, sometimes it’s not about the title, it has to be a good fit financially and energy wise as well Congratulations again
I know that I sound like a broken record but I absolutely love IWU’s campus
@emf1959 - I get that different people get different amounts - but as the vast majority of their aide is need based (as opposed to merit based or talent based) I still don’t see how it’s an insult. It’s a numeric thing, not an evaluation of the worth if your child. But maybe that’s just me
@toowonderful we received wonderful scholarships from other schools. I don’t mean to sound ungrateful but compared to all the other schools whose tuition is a lot lower I found the NYU offer insulting.
@emf1959 - maybe it’s just different ways of seeing things. I never saw the existence of $$ as validation, or the lack of it at lack thereof. Like I said - most of the time it’s numbers in a calculator (Fafsa etc for need based, gpa/scores for merit). That’s why schools have NPCs - in some cases you can figure it out before you even apply. It’s not like NYU has a reputation of giving tons of aide… in my experience they pretty upfront about the fact that they don’t
It’s great that you have great financial offers from other schools - I hope you find the perfect spot
Can someone remind me what the difference is between waitlist and alternate? My d was offered alternate spot at Pace and I am not exactly sure what that means. Thanks!
@breakingbarriers2018 - As I understand it, an “alternate” is attached to a certain person (or persons) who was accepted. If that person declines, you get the spot. A waitlist is more of a general pool
@latinaMTmom Yea!!!
We were just there yesterday! The kids in both BFA Acting and MT and BA are all treated equally there. It is truly a no-hierarchy vibe and they keep the classes small by design. They are not filling quotas – even small ones like 10-20 kids. They choose who they want and that’s it. Its also a rolling admissions for the University. And, although they have final audition dates, I am guessing if someone applied right now who they really wanted they would get in and with money too. Because they are a D3 school, they don’t give athletic scholarships, so the athletes have to get in on grades and scores; and a lot of their money goes to performing arts (and music) kids because – other than Nursing School and pre-MED SCHOOL track, that is what IWU is most proud of.
BTW, my D is going to audition for the separate music scholarship – did you know about that? You don’t have to be a vocal performance or music major to get it (another 1k) and it provides free music/voice lessons for 4 years (privates beyond the regular classes). The deadline to audition is 04/30.
The first year program they just started for Fall of 2018 (first year experiences programs) is also so incredible. Truly a LAC experience opportunity for performing arts kids. E.G., a dog science lab. Yep, real dogs, research etc.
Emerson FA is now available through the portal and D received no merit aid. Boo. We are fortunate that we can afford to send her anyway, if she wants to go, but one year there costs at least two at any of the other schools she got into (with very good merit aid at most of them–go figure)! She is completing a blind study of the curricula at all of her admitted and WL schools this weekend, so perhaps it will drop to the bottom of the list anyway. Ah well, life marches on and ultimately, things will fall where they may. Have a great weekend everyone!
For those with NYU acceptances/WLs - double congrats! I saw the post below this morning that says NYU’s academic acceptance rate dropped to 19% this year!
