@DoinResearch just to chime in a bit that rollons College awards merit aid based on a GPA and test score formula. If a kid meets their stats (posted on admissions page) they qualify for a tiered system of merit awards that are QUITE generous. And their admission stats for entering students’ GPA appear to compare with Muhlenberg based on what you just posted. It’s a GREAT school and really under represented here and in general. My D had all honors classes at a competitive high school and a good GPA and an okay ACT score (she is LD but works hard), and she is doing great there/challenged and the professors are great and the campus is FAR more beautiful than Muhlenberg (having seen both) and the theater is AWESOME. ITS ALSO IN Orlando where there is a ton of film stuff going on. Just a plug for one of my favorite schools ever.
@Noreplays2018 - You are so right, there is so much knowledge here. I have no greater insight, but to say that many people have told the Financial Aid boards on CC are also FULL of information. You could look for Elon in general there, as opposed to Elon BFA on here. Good luck!
Yikes - re college costs - I just remembered something that had completely slipped my mind. If you don’t have a family health insurance plan on which you’re planning to keep your college kids, check the insurance situation at schools they’re considering. A friend alerted me to the fact that not all colleges offer student health insurance policies to domestic students. Probably not a dealbreaker in most cases but worth figuring into total costs when planning. (And if a school DOES provide insurance, and you ARE keeping said kid on your plan, you might be able to save some money by opting out of the college’s student insurance).
Of the three on my D’s final list, I know 1 (the largest) does offer it and just figured out the 2nd one doesn’t - will check into the 3rd if that one resurges in preference.
@katew529 yep. That too. Major major factor.
hey everyone! How are you guys doing? has anyone heard from DePaul Waitlist? Thank you!
@calartsdreamer I just came on to post about DePaul… one good friend of My S just rerouted on his DePaul acceptance… He just declined it because Boston University just offered him a Full Tuition for BFA acting… There have been 2 declines for DePaul Theatre School so far that I know of. hopefully you get in and they offer you a scholarship
^^^^FULL TUITION RIDE for BU? That is incredible.
Wow, @actingdreams! HUGE congratulations to you and your son! Full tuition at BU is definitely “an offer you can’t refuse”! Your son’s journey has been so exciting to follow!
@actorparent1 not us! one of my S closest friends who applied to BU… My S Declined to audition after his visit over the summer although I had attempted to persuade His dear friend was headed to DePaul but the Full tuition for BFA acting at Boston topped everything yes cheers for him!
@artskids not the first time I’ve seen this happen. My BF’s son is at BU as a freshman on the Presidential Scholarship for BFA in Film. I guess it’s proven that Boston U gives Full tuition for BFA programs. That’s fantastic for someone who receives it
BU has also made it nearly impossible for us to say no. After the shadow day on Friday and accepted students day on Saturday, BU has really stolen my D’s heart. Still waiting on CMU - but that may be my dream and not hers.
Oh, sorry, @actingdreams ! I didn’t read closely enough! Well, tell your son’s friend that a stranger on CC says “congratulations!” Lol.
@actingdreams DANG! Lucky kid! My S got NO merit and NO aid for BU. But he is going anyway (unless NYU waitlist pulls through then we have to reconsider…). We don’t qualify for regular financial aid but a bit of merit would have been sweet.
@HopeinMT I’m telling you, financing college these days is appalling! I say if there is a great program and there is some merit, follow the $$$… Going away can be great! My S has let some schools go and even with one with the largest scholarship, he may decline because it doesn’t’ fit who he is.
A Bit of Merit for even those who qualify for nothing would be sweet! I totally agree. Hope you will not have to spend a lot on travel to see your S for school but the experience for him I’m sure will be worth it
@ginaf1102 ahh…That’s the best! when they actually attempt to warm your heart Sounds like she knows where she’s wanted and the feeling may be mutual? It’s hard to live vicariously through our kids Pay attention to the faculty, you may find that Boston or any other school may have Master Graduates from Carnegie Mellon or Tisch or Yale… They all seem to be the same universally so the training has to be great no matter what If she’s excited this week for Boston, something tells me that she’s found her school
@HopeinMT I was laughing when I read your post…,my son got into NYU and is not interested but BU was his first choice and he got rejected. Wish we could switch!
@actingdreams - I didn’t think BU had BFA for film. I think it’s a BS. My S got no merit $ for his film acceptance. We are still struggling with the BA at USC (no money) and the BFA at Syracuse (some $) or NYU (no money and it costs the most).
We visited USC this past weekend (California is heaven) - but I think the program really is geared to get kids jobs (not necessarily performing jobs) in LA. It’s an amazing program. My S liked it. But we are east coasters. I don’t know that he will want to move away from his family and friends to LA for forever. We will visit Syracuse this coming Sunday/Monday. Waiting on NYU until we get the studio assignment. My S is convinced it’ll be the one with the most film (not sure which that is).
@MomofJ5 thanks for clarifying the BFA for BS. It’s BS.The tuition is still fantastic!
I am glad to see that schools give out full rides for talent. It’s typically always merit. it’s nice. USC was a dream for my S last year but he didn’t apply to any W Coast schools. … Syracuse is a GREAT program and they offered $$ I love that. They are saying “hey! here is an incentive and we hope that you put us on the top of your list”
DePaul has been like this. Literally following up via emails/ calls, invites to private groups and the scholarship was a shock for a school that he thought that he had no chance of getting into. I’m hoping that he’d attend DePaul but NYC may still be on his mind. I don’t think he’s going to do the pace. Although the financials are outstanding and call from recent grads, he doesn’t believe the program fits what he was going after.
I guess he puts it that he wants traditional training. We’re getting close. I can’t wait to see what studio assignment for NYU. Maybe this will seal the deal for wherever he’s supposed to be
@momofJ5, I sent you a message but just reading your post here, I totally get it if you are east coast folks. You have three great options. We think highly of them all!
How do I get S’s mind off of May 4th? I hate that after all the waiting we’ve already done he’s still a slave to this process. Talk of commitment and colleges have come to halt because he’s waiting on CMU to let him know his final decision and the fact that it may not happen for him is too much on his mind and I can tell it’s something he wants very badly. I’m trying to be supportive but I hate that he’s wasting some valuable senior year time in “limbo”.
@ginaf1102 our Ds are in the same boat on this one! In LOVE with BU (although with no FA, I’m not in love) and waiting on CMU. BU knows how to do shadow days. D spent 2 days in classes, at rehearsals and seeing shows last week as well. I wasn’t sure she’d get on the plane home :-). If she had that full tuition offer, she’d probably still be there!
