BFA Acting Pre-Screen and Auditions. Class of 2022 - Sharing!

Glad you’re finished @ginaf1102! I just got in from shoveling so much snow. Thank goodness for snowblowers! Glad you made it home safely. Anyone else leaving today from Chicago. Safe Travels

@actingdreams You can always have him be withdrawn from consideration for those schools if they don’t float his boat.

Hi @stagedoormama Thank You for the advice. I didn’t think about that. I will confirm with him this evening to confirm. I also wonder if the location has him questioning it being the right fit. It was ok before he had attended info sessions everywhere. Our kids will find the right fit for sure.

@actingdreams If it were me, I would not withdraw any applications at this point. You never know how things are going to turn out. And maybe you get an offer with a high merit/talent scholarship that you can use as a bargaining chip or leverage with another school.

@Twoboysandadog -Since he already seems to have a full ride at Pace (which is amazing), I am guessing he can use that to his advantage for leverage anywhere.

@stagedoormama That is a very good point! But, I don’t believe they have received anything in writing yet. And, again, you never know how things are going to turn out.

@Twoboysandadog Totally Agree! you know I’ve constantly said until I see things in writing, I am not throwing our chips in anywhere  We still need to weigh all of our options. Thanks again @stagedoormama

about the Pace Scholarship $$ this is in general. I was told that sometimes they give a little who need it and they also give a LOT who need it. I guess if they want you and this is for any school, they find a way to get you there. Producing great students is also an advertisement for their program so I always feel like the schools are also interviewing for us as we are them.

I agree with @Twoboysandadog. Wait for the ink! Funny that your S ( @actingdreams ) didn’t get a good vibe from CMU. I thought it was going to be so stuffy, but they were so nice. My D came out saying Barbara was her BFF - even though she was trying to convince my D to switch to MT and my D said NO - right to Barbara MacKenzie-Wood! While I am so proud of my D sticking to her passion, I don’t know that is a good thing as I just saw a FB post that Barbara is looking for students that are flexible. Ha Ha. It will all work out in the end, right??

@ginaf1102 My S said that Barbra is Really Really Nice! like almost too perfect lol one of the best people who deliver the best acting in her craft if she was in fact Acting. She didn’t ask him to Sing. I don’t know who the man is that he auditioned with first. He had a straight face the entire time so he couldn’t tell if his monologues were received or not. After he chuckled at the extra monologue that he uses sometimes for the 1 minute, the guy finally cracked a smile (couldn’t help it. it’s funny). He enjoyed both of them but he said there was something missing. I’m sure some people who auditioned for Juilliard may have felt the same way. Something felt off like he didn’t belong even though he apparently is potential material if that whole passing thing is really a THING. Our kids find their Tribe. This is all that really matters

Hi all! My son just had Emerson College. Since he’s been leaning towards NYC (unless UNSCA comes through and there is no Juilliard or Suny Purchase … and now we have the Pace Option :), he was veering away from Boston for several reasons outside of just college. Since the staff has been so accommodating when it came to their application and missing items, I told him that he should at least go for the audition.

Today they had a lengthy information session that sounds promising. They seem to have a lot of great programs. The audition itself lasted about 15 minutes and today he auditioned for Sarah Hickler who was very welcoming. You can tell she’s been teaching acting for a long while (he stated) she was really emotional about both of his contemporary monologues especially Arthur Miller and it’s the only time he’s had to use this monologue so he went for it. She apparently enjoyed both. She said that she would’ve asked him questions but his resume looks really nice and she liked his headshot ( no one else had ever mentioned this but very nice compliment). She asked why did he choose both of those monologues because they both were so powerful. After this, she gave him her card and told him to contact her about anything regarding Emerson College and she’d be happy to help.

We have 1 more tomorrow morning then we’ve completed auditioning for every school that we had applied to except for 1 that he no longer seemed interested in

I have just one applying this year – younger D. Older D is in her senior year of tech theater.

Jennifer Johns of BAA is the one who drummed it into our heads that thank you cards are the way to go. Older D corroborated that the faculty of her school are very pro-thank-you-note (they spend time each semester working on how to interview, and how to generally present yourself in the business world of theater – Univ. of Evansville). For BAA the kids send out notes that include a picture of themselves. So far younger D has been using generic note cards for college auditions, no picture involved.

I figure you never know when these people will pop up again in your life decades from now, so why not make a gracious impression every chance you get. Younger D is very “what will I be doing in later life” oriented, so she tends to keep channels open with everyone she meets. As a related aside, if your kids were remarking on someone flitting around auditions asking what they pictured their lives would be like after decades of working as an actor, that was my D. In her head she’s already through with these auditions, attended school, graduated, and is busy figuring out what comes after that, and whether what she’s doing today supports that vision.

I hope everyone is able to wrap things up and get out of town before the snow hits tonight! How late do auditions go today? I know there are some in the morning.

@“Jamieand Winthrop” we know The New School goes until the early afternoon. They allowed us to change audition time to 9 so that my S could get back to school.
Hope everyone has safe travels. The big snow is coming late tonight I believe

The airlines are not charging change fees for travelers aiming to get out of Chicago earlier.

D is at her Emerson audition until 6. She can’t change to the morning group since she’s got another audition. I’ll have the car packed and ready the minute her feet hit the door! Two years ago, it took us over 12 hours to make the drive from Chicago to Cleveland. Fun times ahead, I suspect!

drive safely @artskids!

Safe travels @artskids. Yesterday Emerson said 2-5pm but it was more like 1.5-2 hours. Hope this happens for you too

Thank you @bfahopeful. By the way - D LOVED her UNCSA audition. UNCSA also had hands-down the best group orientation/presentation we attended all week!

LOVE that info @artskids. So glad your D enjoyed her audition and YES the info session is crazy amazing. Not sure why or if everyone feels the same way, but we had our socks blown off during ours 2 years ago. Best wishes for great news from many schools for your lovely D! After this you will have to start a consulting business as you will have successfully navigated this 3 times.
