@Jkellynh17 - D has tix for Angels - she is SO excited. Mark Rylance came and gave a MasterClass at NYU - there was a lottery, and D was lucky enough to get a spot, he was amazing, and SO gracious - took the time to talk and interact with every person there.
@BrokeDad0530 - have you ever used the Spothero app? We have done VERY well with it in NYC (and Boston, Chicago etc)
@jbtcat uh oh about New Yorker! My daughters Florida State audition was there and the lobby was really nice so I sort of assumed the rest of it would be nice. I got a room there with my girls for May I’m thinking maybe I should find somewhere else.
@marg928 yes my husband said the same thing about the lobby! It is possible that they have some better rooms and he just got stuck with an old one (it was a very busy weekend in NYC, the weekend he stayed there)! Maybe it was just his experience!
We stayed at Even Hotel @ S Time Square and it was a good location. Also, Come From Away was sooooo good. We sawHamilton, Hello Dolly and The Bands Visit and Come From Away was the favorite for both my D and myself. Most of the original cast was still a part of the show in January.
Headed to NYC this weekend. Seeing Come from Away, Book of Mormon and Farinelli and the King. If we have time, we may try to catch another one. Have tickets for Ham and DEH later this year.
We’re staying at the Tryp Hotel… anyone have experience there? It’s not far from Penn Station.
@BrokeDad0530 I would download the app Citymapper. It gives you all the various ways to get around the city(subway, Bus etc) and tells you exactly how to do it. Thanks to the app we were able to get around the city on the subway successfully. Hope you have a wonderful visit.
Glad to hear that so many of you enjoyed Come From Away! It truly is a show that everyone should see. Such a beautiful story and the way it is told is inspired. I’m not at all biased because I know the ‘kids’ who wrote it.
@alwaysamom please let those “kids” know we LOVED their show and listen to the recording frequently. Can not wait to see what they do next. I have a talented 19 year old that would love to audition for them!
Thanks for posting, @cassidysmom -,Purchase is one of my D’s top choices, so it’s very helpful to know that letters have gone out. I’m sorry for the rejection, but glad your D isn’t upset! I hope she gets into her dream school!
@cassidysmom -I’m sorry to hear. They all sting. Hope she gets something she’s happy with.
@brokedad - if that handle is true, you might consider looking on Long Island for a place to stay for the first night (before going to the school) and then stay in NYC for the night following. Hotels will be cheaper, parking will be free and you won’t have morning stress getting out to the school on time.
So many others - small world about Long Island- I also grew up on “the Island”- very close to Post (used to be called CW Post- now it’s called LIU-Post).
Just a post for those heading to NYC – if you haven’t seen/experienced it, I cannot recommend SLEEP NO MORE highly enough. It’s an experience like no other – the truly immersive part of immersive theater. I recommend it to all theater people I know going to NYC, and everyone I’ve recommended it to have also become converts. Find out as little as possible ahead of time, and be prepared to be blown away. FYI, it’s decidedly R-rated, but in a legit/artistic way. I went with my 15yo daughter (now the one applying to college) a few years ago, and she was similarly amazed/affected, and we’ve been back for a second visit since.
@actingdreams The dinner part isn’t really important/crucial to it. The bar area is fun and drops you into the era and feel of it pretty quickly – and you can spend more time in the bar when it’s all over – but it’s really about the entire McKittrick Hotel and Sleep No More experience. I’d say don’t worry about the dinner or the “VIP package” – it’s not really part of what makes the whole thing special. Just wear comfortable shoes, be fully open to new experiences (knowing that you’re perfectly safe – it’s not a jump-out horror-type thing), and it will blow your mind. Try and separate from anyone you’ve gone in with – it’s most affecting when you’re all alone. Oh, and try and book for the earliest “entry” time you can – meaning, for the 7-10pm “show”, you can book 7, 7;15, 7:30, 7:45 – try and get 7pm, since it’ll give you closer to a full 3 hours inside.
