BFA Acting program with dance/voice opportunities?

I am a high school Junior who wants to get a BFA in Acting, not Musical Theatre. However, I still want to attend a school where I could take dance or voice classes as electives (especially dance.) What schools have a program like this? Please and thank you. :)

Syracuse University has both a BFA in Acting and in Musical Theatre. I believe that BFA acting students can dance classes and voice lessons. I know that Acting students often audition for and are cast in musicals.

Carnegie Mellon University also has both BFA Acting and Musical Theatre. I believe the situation at CMU is the similar to Syracuse.

Thank you so much KatMT!

I was in the same position as you and went to the University of Oklahoma. When you study musical theatre there, you major in your main focus (Drama, Dance, or Voice) and basically minor in the other 2. So I ended up with a BFA in Drama, musical theatre emphasis.

I certainly could have taken all those dance and music classes without the MT part, but I wouldn’t have been able to take Acting for Musical Theatre, which is different from regular acting classes because you do song work like monologues and scenes.

I would suggest finding a program that has a MT program along with an Acting program, that way you know all the classes you want to take will be available to you. However, at some schools the programs are more integrated than at others, so ask around. Also, at OU the Dance and Drama programs are located in the same building, and Music is next door. That makes it easier too!

University of the Arts has a BFA Acting program as well as a BFA MT program. The acting majors can take dance and voice and are also offered the opportunity to take a minor in MT which structures the dance and voice curriculum specifically for acting majors.

Numerous BFA programs that have more of a European/Russian approach place much emphasis on physical development as well as vocal. There is not a BFA program I have heard of that does not require its students to take movement courses AND dance courses.

Carnegie Mellon and University of Michigan do allow straight theatre BFAs to attend certain dance and vocal lessons along with regular acting courses.

I believe any program will require you to take vocal and speech courses…and that might entail singing as a part of the curriculum.

Thank you everybody! All of the advice is extremely helpful.

This is exactly the situation my D is in. She has been asking this question at all the programs she has been accepted at. So, here is what we know. CCM Acting allows you to take voice lessons, but it can be difficult to get them; no guarantees. Cal Arts allows you to take voice lessons, but you will be taught by an MFA music student. Emerson allows you to take voice lessons, and it is with a real profesor in the music program. We don’t know yet on UCLA, but will find out and I’ll let you know.

OCU requires 3 hours of dance, 3 hours of voice (each hour is equivalent to one semester of a type of lesson). You can also take Voice for as many semesters as you’d like- your choice. Taking dance is more difficult just due to scheduling issues, but there is the Community Dance Center, which you can take dance classes for fun (no credit).

At Indiana U Bloomington my D is a BA in Theatre with a dance minor and has had fantastic private voice lessons through teachers at Jacob’s School of Music. If you are open to a BA as well as a BFA you might want to consider IU.

Thanks! All of these sound great and I’m looking into the programs now. Ahhh I love College Confidential.

North Carolina School of the arts has a lot of musical theatre training within their curriculum including dance and voice

a lot

Point Park allows you to major in acting and minor in musical theater. Or you can just add singing and/or dance classes to your schedule as electives…

Virginia Commonwealth University is a BFA in acting with musical theatre training and performance opportunities. James Madison
University offers BAs in Theatre and in Musical Theatre. Theatre concentrators can take many of the same voice and dance classes as the MT Concentrators. Not sure it is mentioned above but Muhlenburg is another BA in theatre with voice and dance opportunities.

Hi Blarney the college mom is back again with more questions.
So we finally decided on West Chester theatre program and have to sign on the dotted line with financial aid before Friday. Made the child aware that this is a financial stress for us and we both will have to share student loans. He then comes back to day and says maybe he will attend community college for a year to see how serious he is about this (school/theatre…). If he does this, how hard is it to transfer in a Theatre Program? I am aware he will probably have to audition to get in program, but because they are specialized programs, I was not sure. Do most programs have the basics that all college freshmen need, so one year at community college will not make a difference? Any info. will be greatly appreciated. This is one mom who will be very greatful when this is all over.

My daughter is a BFA in acting major at Oklahoma City University. Every semester she takes 2 credit hours of voice and either Tap, Jazz or ballet. She will be a Junior in the Fall. She absolutely loves it! You have to ‘level’ for the dance classes and they tell you what level you are to take. It is a wonderful school!
