<p>Help! I am looking to apply to schools for a possible BFA or BA in theater. Not musical theater. All of the posts I have seen on this site and elsewhere on the internet give detailed descriptions of the top schools for musical theater but none for the successful straight theater programs. Could somebody give me a list of really great schools for BFA or BA theater?</p>

<p>I second Northwestern, but don't stop there. NYU's Tisch School of the Arts has an outstanding Drama department with an undergrad BFA program. Juilliard is also outstanding; I think of it as pre-professional training more than a traditional undergraduate education, but it does have a BFA option. Yale, Vassar, and DePaul are also frequently mentioned. I've also heard good things about the University of Minnesota which works closely with the Guthrie Theatre, a highly regarded regional theater company based in Minneapolis.</p>
<p>Technically Northwestern is a BS by default, though you can get a BA by fulfilling some extra requirements (like a second year of language).</p>

<p>Many of the MT schools have excellent theatre programs as well. By going BA rather than BFA, you extend the list since so many excellent traditional colleges and universities have strong theatre programs. I know that there is a book out there that lists performing arts schools with an entire section on drama. I found that theatre school lists were much, much easier to access than MT schools, since there are ever so few MT programs. CC has the only MT info site that I have ever seen, but there is much info out there on theatre programs. Princeton Review actually rates schools in terms of the performing arts/theatre scenes. You have a wide, wide range to choose your school.</p>
