BFA Drama Programs That Offer Musical Theatre Electives?

Hello all! I had a very hard time choosing whether to major in Musical Theatre or straight Drama, but in the end I decided that it would be better to build that solid foundation of acting. I'm looking into schools that offer a BFA program in straight Drama, but I also would like to be able to take classes in voice, dance, etc as well as being able to audition for any Musicals that the school may do. Are there any schools that fit what I'm looking for?

Elon University has a BFA acting program (as well as BFA Music theatre and BFA dance). Acting majors can audition for the musicals and dance productions and are occasionally cast, can take voice lessons and dance classes as electives if they fit into their schedule and are not full. It is certainly possible.

NYU - Tisch
Syracuse
Carnegie Mellon
University of the Arts

All have BFA MT Majors, but allow Theatre/ Drama majors to take some MT classes, audition for musicals (I think at all of the above), etc…

I believe the same is true at UCF (FL).

Of the above schools I believe that at Syracuse and CMU the MT and Acting students take the same acting classes, and audition for plays so one could be a MT Major and get a solid foundation in acting. This may be the case at the other schools as well…

At VCU (VA) they do not offer a MT program, but ther are MT electives that the BFA Acting students can take, and they produce musicals on a regular basis.

University of the Arts BFA acting majors can audition for a MT minor at the end of their freshman year.

Oklahoma City University as well…BFA Drama with MT

I’m going to shill my own school for a second.

I’m a USC BA Theatre student and I have far more opportunities for everything MT while still getting an EXCELLENT training background in my acting emphasis. I’ve been here a week and am already cast in two musicals this semester as well as a straight play and 4 theatre classes.

At USC, BA Theatre > BFA Acting. And there’s TONSSSSS of MT.

At Florida State University many of the BFA Acting students take voice lessons or dance classes (or both.) They also are welcome to audition for the musicals.

At UArts, the acting and MT students are also in the same primary acting studio classes for the first 2 1/2 years. In addition, acting and MT students can audition for all the shows each semester without distinction based on program.

Musical Student: How have you been cast in shows so quickly? Are these student shows? How did you find out about them? I’m a freshman who is planning a theater minor and would like to know about student shows and auditions. Any information you can provide would be greatly appreciated!! THANKS!!

hey Rosieoney–I’ll PM you.

My s attends CCM for Drama. The Drama students and MTs take acting from the same instructors, although they are in separate classes. However, Drama students can take dance and voice if and when classes fit into their schedules. Unfortunately, I do not think that drama students can audition for musicals or vice versa, like at some other programs, mentioned above.

At University of North Carolina School of the Arts, although it is an Acting BFA, where you can’t take elective courses, there are musical theater components integrated into the program. Such as how you take dance every semester (either jazz, modern, or tap) and for some terms you have singing classes.
