BFA in Acting Performance or MT?

I know I want to do either of these. I'll be applying for college this upcoming year. My top school is University of Michigan. Which major do you think is easier to get into, and will help me in my career? And if I do the Acting Major, do you think i could do a Dance minor without the workload getting too heavy? Thanks for your help!

Usually musical theatre and acting are both equally competitive. The acting major tends to have less students than the musical theatre does but their usually matching as far as admissions goes.
I want to become an actress and I have wondered if musical theatre or acting is better. The thing is I sing in acapella groups and have the ability but I simply like acting better and have more fun in straight plays so Im pursuing BFA/BA Acting. To keep up with my voice though Im going to do outside lessons. I think it all depends on what you want to do in your career. I want to focus on straight plays, TV, Film, etc. but if a musical comes around that matches my voice I will try out.
Also, I think it could be doable to do both acting and dance. At colleges Ive went to I’ve always heard that you just have to have good management skills to plan your schedule and work.
I hope this answers your questions.

Thanks Actr12 that did help alot!!

There are schools with BFA Acting and MT programs where the acting students and MT students take the same core acting studio classes for 4 years and a focus in the MT program is to train actor/singers who can dance. There are schools with Acting and MT programs where Acting students can minor in MT and get voice, dance and MT repertoire as part of a formal minor. There are schools where there is a lot cross over between the 2 programs including acting and Mt students auditioning for both straight dramas and musicals. While UMich is a great school and you should certainly explore all that it can offer you, don’t be so focused on it as your “top choice” to the exclusion of researching a broad variety of schools in depth to determine what other schools also offer programs that can meet your needs and desires. You may want to search the MT forum where there has been a lot of discussion about acting programs with significant MT opportunities.
