My D would like to study classical Guitar. Most school offer a BMus or a BA (Music). Carnegie Mellon offer a Bfa which seems quite unique.

What is the difference between these degrees ? Would the exprnce be different when we compare CM with USC/JH/Tufts-Nec and North western

Here is a good link for reading about different types of degrees in music: http://www.peabody.jhu.edu/conservatory/admissions/tips/doubledegree.html

The BFA is not as common as the other degrees but I looked at the Carnegie Mellon site and the classical guitar program looks great, as do the performance opportunities.

Other programs for guitar might include Hartt School at U. of Hartford, Ithaca Conservatory at Ithaca College, Oberlin, NEC, San Francisco Conservatory, Bennington College (if Hand is still there). I think Bard has classical guitar now but check.

I wouldnt worry as much about type of degree as teacher, and the curriculum and course requirements at each school. Performance opportunities too. A BM will be about 2/3-3/4 music, a BA is often 1/4-1/3 music though sometimes 1/2. I think a BFA really varies. Does your daughter have other interests, academic or musical? Tht can make a difference.

Good luck and keep coming on here with questions!

ps punctuation is not working right on my keyboard…

Jason Vieux teaches at CIM and while his studio is very difficult to get into, his students do extremely well. Worth taking a look!
