BFA MT/Arts management or administration

Does anyone know of any schools with the option to minor in arts management/administration (or similar degree) as well as getting a BFA in Mt? I know Pace offers this and Shenandoah does but it adds another year on to college and you get an MS in it. Any others? Thank you!!

I did my BFA in Musical Theatre and Arts Administration at Viterbo University. It’s possible but difficult to finish both degrees in 4 years (summer classes would be required, and coming in with credits would be helpful). Viterbo also has a minor in arts admin. Other schools I looked at, as someone who wanted to double major or minor in arts admin: Elon and Ohio Northern. I didn’t apply for these programs, but look into Rider, Illinois Wesleyan, and Point Park as well.

I believe University of the Arts lets you minor in business/arts management, and Wagner has a BA in theatre/MT as well as a major in arts admin. similar to Viterbo, it is possible but difficult to do in 4 years.

Take a look at Rider

Wright State has an arts management certificate. It is new since my D graduated, but we know an MT who is doing it.

SUNY Fredonia has a BFA MT and also offers a minor in Dance studio administration. The classes appear to be more business than dance oriented and might transfer over into other arts management areas.

University of Michigan has an arts management minor – very doable with MT BFA.

I know for sure Rider has it and has said that it is possible. Also, look at Marymount Manhattan.

Hartt has an arts admin minor, and many BA programs offer great training and would allow a double major

I will be graduating with a full IB diploma, so if the school accepts IB, mostly all my GEDs would be covered.

@elledaspitzer every school is different in what they accept toward gen eds. One of my kids went in with 45 credits and another with 30, but when we were looking at which offers made sense to accept, this was a big part of our research. Some of the more academically-competitive schools would have accepted none of their classes toward actual requirements in gen ed. Some would, but only in certain areas. And colleges change from year to year. Please take a look at each college you’re considering (every college has info about this on their website) to see what your classes could count as, and don’t take our word for it here at CC unless we are/have a student directly in a specific program at this minute.

In my opinion, it is not worth it to stay in school an extra year or even to go for a master’s degree in arts administration (and incur those additional expenses) if you are graduating with an undergraduate theatre/ MT degree. The best thing you can do to get an entry level–assistant-- job (and that’s the level you start with regardless of having an undergrad or graduate degree) is to gain hand’s on experience through school productions and/or internships with producers, theatre companies, casting agents, agents, managers, etc.

It’s all about on-the-job training and networking–not skills that will be adequately taught in school. If you can minor and graduate in 4 years, then sure, why not go for the minor. But having that minor on your resume is not worth more tuition–it will not get you to a different staring point. Same with master’s programs. Everyone’s first jobs are on the assistant level–that’s where you will learn the business. It is unrealistic to think you will skip this step just because you took some classes in college; you learn the business on the job. And keep in mind that assistant positions are very low-paying and you certainly don’t want to have debt. D was making the same amount of money as her auditioning friends who were waitressing and working as babysitters when she was working for CAA (a NYC top talent agency) in their theatre department as an assistant. Quite possibly some of her friends might have been making more!

^^^I agree with @uskoolfish. You can now minor in Arts Management at BW.
