BFA MT at FSU

How is the Musical Theatre program at FSU in more recent years? I’ve heard a lot of great things about it but I have also been hearing some bad things about the program more recently. I am considering transferring to FSU because I need to stay in FL and there are no other schools I would want to go to. My current school’s theatre program is not quite fully developed yet and I might not want to stay after this year. I wish I could go out of state but the cost of everything is way too expensive.

The MT program at FSU is exceptional. Many of their graduates are hired straight out of college and are very well trained. You can be a MT major through their BFA or BM programs both of which have a great curriculum. Keep in mind, though, that this program is HIGHLY selective (generally around 10 MT’s total per year) and perhaps even more so for a transfer student. They do offer a BA Theatre which is not by audition, but rather by application. This degree is more suited for a candidate with a more general interest in theatre and not for a student looking for a performance based curriculum. If you need to stay in Florida, UCF also offers a MT degree and although they accept a few more and possibly have a smaller applicant pool it is still very competitive and I know of many very talented students who were not accepted in to either program. Because of the incredibly reasonable tuition for instate students (particularly with the Bright Futures program) both of these schools have a very strong talent pool of applicants. Also, keep in mind with both schools you MUST be accepted academically to the University to be admitted into their programs. As you probably know making a lateral move from University to University in Florida can be very difficult so I would apply as early as possible to the Universities if you are considering this option.
If you need to be in Florida and you are only considering the Florida schools you can do some research in to Florida College of the Arts and New World School of the Arts which have their academic component at a community college. If you have any particular questions that I might be able to help you with feel free to PM me.
Good luck in your search!

My D auditioned last Sunday- at the final audition. Unfortunately, from past year’s posts it appears that if she had gotten in she would have gotten a phone call by now???

In any case- I just want to say the we were super impressed with the MT program and the staff and the facilities. We attended the musical, The Full Monty, and it was both fabulous and hilarious!!! We were so impressed with the performances and the theater.

The overall campus was so much prettier than we had imagined too!!!

The audition experience was quite good and quite organized and the staff were very forthcoming and helpful in the information and instructions they gave. It is clear that the program gives excellent training and is extremely supportive and challenging as well. If anyone in future years wants a superb program and is wondering whether to make the trip- do it!!!
