BFA Musical Theater - how tough to get in?

We have Ole Miss on the radar as having a good reputation for its Acting and Musical Theater departments. It is on our non-audition list, but we are aware there are auditions for MT at the end of Year 1, and for Acting at the end of Year 2. How competitive is it to get in? If you don't get in to the MT program, how realistic is it that you can get cast in musical productions? Is there a lot of competition for roles with grad students and members of the community? Thanks!

I don’t have any answers but we are also interested. My D is a junior and visited Ole Miss last year as a soph, but at the time she was thinking of pursuing a major in education and/or psychology. She always loved theatre but thought it wasn’t serious enough.

We have a visit scheduled in April to meet with the coordinator of MT program and to see Showstoppers, their MT performance troupe.

Are you a Senior or Junior? I’ll be happy to post a report after our April visit.

I’m sure you are aware of the large MT community in the CC MT forum, albeit there is a tendency toward the more well-known schools. Good luck!!

Yes, we’ve combed the MT forum and find the parents’ responses so helpful. I am trying to keep school-specific questions to the school forums. We are visiting in April, too, and are trying to make an appt with the department head. My D is a Junior. She is already preparing for auditions, and we are trying to get together a balanced list of audition and non-audition schools. I’d love to share notes on your visit. Feel free to send me a message!

This is the text of an email that I received from Rene Pulliam, the head of the MT dept at Ole Miss:
