BFA Musical Theater Transfer

Hello everyone,

Im currently studying Theater at a BA university and I have made the decision that I would like to audition at some BFA conservatory style programs. The schools on my list are BOCO, Hartt, Ithaca, CCM, CMU, and Pace University. I will auditioning next season and am spending the entire summer working on preparing and polishing audition materials. The song choices for my ballad are shown below: if I could get people's feedback if possible, that'd be wonderful. Im a male, 19 years old and about 5'11. Im a tenor and can play both leading man and character roles, but usually get cast as romantic leading type character.

Shall I take my heart and Go- Goldilocks
Younger than springtime- South Pacific
I turned the corner- Millie
If i loved you (reprise)- carousel
old devil moon- finians rainbow

If people also have any monologue or uptempo selections, feel free to throw some out there. Im not entirely worried about those, but suggestions are always welcome. Again, I just want to ensure that I pick an appropriate ballad.

Nick

Not sure why no one answered you.

You need to research each school you are auditioning for and see what their requirement is. Then you should find a good vocal coach (not a voice teacher) and review your song selections with that person.

The single most important thing about selecting a song is that you really like the song and you really like to sing it. Also it shows you off!

Good luck

My daughter decided to transfer from a BA to a BFA program. She had a lot of support from her current faculty and vocal professor so they helped her fine tune her audition pieces. One of her professors is also a director so he gave her lots of advice from his side of the audition. She was accepted to every school she auditioned for.

I agree with the last poster, if you don’t have access to current university staff that are willing to help you then find an audition coach to work with. Do be prepared that the new school may not accept your credits from your current school and that you may have to start over at square 1. DD had enough credits accepted that she can enter as a sophomore but not all schools will do that.

My daughter also transferred- from one BFA program to another. Like Changingmt’s D, she was able to transfer in as a sophomore, although she had enough units to go in as a junior. If I remember correctly, the program she just graduated from was the only one that took her as a sophomore- the other BFA’s would have required her to start over as a freshman. Her 2nd choice program that she considered transferring to was a BA at UCLA and they would have taken her as a junior. In the end, it took her 5 years to graduate instead of 4.

D went from BA to BFA, she will be repeating her sophomore year. I know Hartt told her she would be restarting as a freshman. UArts will take some transfers as Sophomores too. I don’t know of any that will take a transfer as a junior.

My D is a freshman and considering transfering to BFA program. Can you tell me which school your D was accepted as a sophomore?? Thank you!

This post is almost 3 years old, @danils and the original poster only posted one time so I’m sure he’s not on here any more.

Also, @danils, just a tip: if you want to reply to a particular poster, put their name with @ in front of it - that way they get a notification. If you just make post on a thread without naming the person, they can’t see it unless they actually happen to come here and read that thread.
