BFA questions

I know the difference between a BA and a BFA, but can anyone tell me what acting classes are actually like? Do you mainly do improv? perform scenes in a group setting? i'm just wondering how classes are set up, and how much a BFA in acting really teaches you about the craft. Would it make more sense to just get a BA in a reliable field like teaching, and take classes and audition on the side? I'm not so sure...also, are there any good bfa schools that accept average students? bu, northwestern, nyu, yale...too competitive for my test scores. i know of uarts, purchase, ncsa...any other suggestions? thanks so much!!

I couldn't tell you much about classes because I'm a stage manager so I don't research acting stuff but I can answer your question about acceptance.

If you're applying to a BFA (or a BA that requires auditions) then, ultimately, your grades don't really matter. With all the BFA programs I've applied to, they all say that your audition/interview is 80% of the application process. If you're good enough, the department will fight for you to get accepted even if your grades aren't the norm for that school. Definitely don't let grades or test scores deter you from applying to acting programs. As long as you think you'll be able to handle the liberal arts core at the school (based on your own assessment of your abilities as a student) then I'd say go for it and apply.

One more thing, Yale's BA undegrad theatre program is mega competitive and will have a lot to do with grades (just as lot of just BA programs will). Just something to consider.

Hope this helps.

thanks so much for the reply!
