I am looking into the Business Honors Program at UT Austin, and it is already Uber-competitive, but how much more so for OOS students. I know UT focuses on class rank, but does this program? Are EC’s much more important? My school does not rank which will give me a leg up (good test scores, not great rank).
It’s very hard for OOS students to get in at all. My OOS had excellent stats. He did get into engineering, but not the honors program. Grades ARE important, and if yours aren’t very high, it will be tough.
@MaineLonghorn My GPA unweighted is 3.94 (one B+ freshman year), GPA weighted is 5.00 on a 5.3 scale, and 11 AP courses so far, avg grade 93-94. EC’s are kinda unique but not impressive in terms of awards. What should I think my chances are with these grades? . Should I not place a lot of hope into placement into this program? It’s not very important to me btw, I just found out about the program a couple of days ago, but it’ll be hard to pay for UT OOS without any programs or scholarships.
Sadly i worry is very tough…i just applied for McCombs OOS with 3.92 UW/35 ACT, internships this summer with Merrill and Junior Achievement and feel lucky if I get into regular McCombs…
@DG I did JA too! I’ll see where I get in lol if I have to go to my safety I’ll be fine, but how the heck did you get an internship with Merrill??? Internships are the one thing I wish I had done but I had no idea where to start, it’s also basically the only thing that matters after college admissions.
Also I used to hold UT Austin in a super high regard but for in state it’s a safety for a bunch of people so for it’s tuition I’m not gonna be that sad if I don’t get in.
Ha…will see…i had a friend that got me the internship…I don’t know that UT is a safety for anyone especially McCombs…but i could be wrong…i view it as a reach for me…
@DG Someone else who was in-state for UT said it was kinda the state flagship safety for most Texans… but out of state is just so competitive
@TCHIT87, it is NOT a safety for most Texans, since only the top 6% of each high school class is guaranteed admittance. It is competitive in-state, also. I was in the last of three generations in my family to attend UT. None of the next generation got in, and the kids are certainly not slackers.
Its definitely not a safety. Its not even a safety for top 6% at this point because we aren’t guaranteed to get our major (especially if your are planning for business and compsci)
@MaineLonghorn No bump for legacy at UT is what I have read, true?
@Meddy, correct. My nephew had quite the connections (many relatives had attended plus his grandfather had been an award-winning UT prof for over 40 years) and still got rejected. His stats were not bad, either.
OP: BHP is tough for OOS applicants. Plus, you forgot to share your ACT or SAT score.
Any OOS BHP interviews yet?
No, it’s not a safety. It’s auto admissions if you are an TX resident and you are the in the top 6% of your class, but you are not guaranteed admission to your choice of major. For McCombs you need to be in top 4% and they also look at your SAT/ACT. For engineering and computer science it’s even more competitive.
