BHP/McCombs Student taking questions!

Ask me any specific, business-related (admissions, honors housing, classes, etc.) questions, and I'll try my best to answer questions! I know it was definitely helpful for me to have this resource when I applied. :) Good luck in your applications!

I understand that UT does a wholistic review now… BUT how likely do you think it is to be admitted to McCombs with a 29 ACT and top 3.5% of class with solid EC’s? I am retaking my SAT and ACT in Oct hoping to do better, but if I don’t do you think my chances are greatly deterred?

For McCombs, at 3.5% with solid EC’s (assuming these include leadership positions), you stand a pretty decent chance. A 29 ACT is approximately a 1900/1300 M+CR so that falls within the average. It really depends on the applicant pool, but you sound like a standard applicant and definitely don’t fall below the average. If you can get strong SAT/ACT scores in Oct (which I completely believe is possible), then you will basically be a lock.

I’m president of student council (basically president of the whole high school lol), editor in chief of the school newspaper, head/commitee chair of like 3 or 4 clubs, and have 300+ hours of volunteering

SAT is at 1440 for CR and M

GPA is at 4.01 → this is weighted. school does not rank nor provide unweighted GPAs

i’ve won volunteer of the year for an organization, other than that i dont really have any awards

whachu think about my chances for BHP

Pretty decent. It’s hard to say for sure since you’re unranked.

Is it true that business honors at UT actually attend and get credit for a course that teaches them how to write a resume and how to dress for interviews? I am sorry, but if this is BHP at Texas, I have to call BS. UT ought to be ashamed.

Both BHP students and regular McCombs students take a one hour credit course their first year where they learn about the various business majors. This is the bulk of the class and is a prerequisite to declaring a major. While students do write a resume and discuss interviewing skills, that encompasses a very small part of the overall one hour class. The class is actually very helpful to students and is hardly “BS.”

BTW Placido, did you ever determine what is included in the Plan II curriculum? It’s been a while since you’ve ■■■■■■■ here, so I’ll help refresh your memory:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-texas-austin/1322061-plan-ii-vs-usc.html#post14198591</a></p>

@Placido

Yes, the course you are referring to is BA101/H. The class is actually over an hour. However, the course’s goal is not to teach you how to write a resume/dress; it is to touch on the specifics of each major and teach the basics of business. The resume is an assignment, not covered in class. They give you the template and expect you to complete it on your own. The dress code is just a handout. You scoff at the simplicity of it all, but there are many people out there who have no clue what type of clothing “business casual” consists of (not just talking about UT; ivies included…). Also, if writing an effective resume were simple, Yahoo wouldn’t headline “How to write a good resume” every other week.

I am thinking about transferring internally into Mccombs for marketing. I am currently in
the college of Natural Science and my situation is about dropping a class. I’m in introduction to programming and I can’t stand the work and I was wondering if you think a q drop would off set a 3.7+ GPA and my chances of getting it?

Do you know any people who are in mccombs and are taking pre med classes? how well do they manage? Are they stressed, get too much work, etc?

@Utfan09

I don’t know too much regarding internal transfer, other than they mainly focus on gpa (though I’m sure leadership positions would be a nice bonus). Personally, I don’t think a q drop would affect your admissions. You can call and ask though :)

I know a TON of people at McCombs who are doing it with the premed track; it’s a pretty good portion. They manage pretty well, in part because the track helps fill the science core curriculum. I know the premed track will hurt your gpa a little more than taking easy filler courses, but that’s the trade off. Everyone gets stressed at times, but being premed is very manageable. You don’t have to spend as much time networking (I know a lot of premeds skip the career expo), and it definitely doesn’t hurt your social life, haha.

Can you be in BHP, do well in all your classes, and still have fun and party?

I don’t know that I would get into BHP, or even McCombs, but I always wondered if it was easy to manage a party life along with good grades

As far as internal transfers go, (for McCombs in general), what is the average gpa? And, do many people internally transfer from Undergraduate studies?

Also, any advice on how to stand out in the application process would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks:)

I think you just described 99% of the students in BHP. Honestly, I don’t know how everyone does it. But somehow BHP students are able to manage multiple leadership positions, good grades, and hard partying. I think it’s good time management and not forgetting where your priorities lie. I wouldn’t necessarily use the word easy, but yes, a social life is very doable.

Under internal transfer, you should see past stats (with mean gpa) and other helpful information.

People transfer internally from all colleges within UT (UGS, engineering, COLA…). I don’t think they keep record of the specific schools that people transfer from, nor do they care of which schools.

As for standing out, I would drop by/call McCombs admissions to ask them some question, just in case they happen to remember you when they see your application. Leadership positions in any organization would be MOST helpful. Something to show them you took initiative.

When can I expect the interview email (if I am considered) if I submitted my application on October 8th?

I heard back slightly less than a month later. I would say anywhere between 1-2 months. Most likely done before December.

My S applied to UT first week of August & is trying to get into McCombs. He top 2%, 1790 SAT, in Natl Honor Soc, Young Life and regional qualifer in varsity golf, among other things. He’s interested in accting and is taking several AP and dual credit courses. What are his chances of getting into McCombs and is there any add’l requirement to take accting if he does.

@Hayacostbh

Along the same lines, do they notify everyone of their interviews at the same time? or do they go through the people who submitted earliest? Thanks!
