BHP/McCombs Student taking questions!

@Hayacostbh: I’ve applied to UT Mccombs, Plan II, BHP, and the Liberal Arts Honors on October 8. When should I expect to hear back from them regarding my decision?

I feel that I might not receive the good news from BHP or Mccombs at this point, as I have not received any response for the past month and a half.

@rondevious

Seems like you have a pretty good chance! I don’t think they look “mostly” at test scores. It’s definitely a factor in the admissions process (if you have a 200, no matter how amazing your resume is, they’re not going to let you in), but it’s not the only factor. I think the high rank + leadership in EC’s will more than compensate for it. As for the December SAT, try your best! Two weeks is still plenty of time to raise your score. :)

I can’t tell you anything terribly specific about Econ because I’m not too familiar with the program; I have heard that it is a very good department, so I assume Econ supplemented with Business will result in job offers. :)

If admissions works the same way it did last year, this is how the timeline should look:

UT McCombs: rolling admissions; anytime from when you applied until March(?); the later your hear, the less likely it is good news, though this is NOT always the case.
Plan II: Comes out in waves; The first wave has just come out, so if you’ve been accepted, you should receive notification. If it’s an acceptance, you should hear soon since you applied early (either now, december, or february). If you don’t hear back, it is probably a rejection (which they release once all the acceptees have been notified in Feb/March):confused:
BHP: Since you applied priority, you will hear back by December whether it be acceptance, deferral, or rejection. However, if you haven’t had an interview, it is probably unlikely.
Liberal Arts Honors: Not sure

Hope this helps, and good luck!

Well in terms of leadership, I am a section leader and historian in band, secretary of HOSA, secretary of Keyclub, an officer/designer for CHISPA and Spanish club, an orientation leader, camp counselor, and for one year I was the year book’s copy editor. And 300 hours of community service. My essays are very strong about band, art, and funding for fine arts. I’m just worried that my profile isn’t really business oriented… possibly detracting from acceptance?

Darned for working too hard on grades/EC and forgetting about SAT scores.
Plus a 26 on my ACT kind of sucks too.

Hey, thanks for taking the time to do this. I’m currently a junior in high school in-state. What can I do to raise my chances of getting accepted to McCombs and BHP as high as possible? I’d greatly appreciate it if you could let me know what I need to work on. Here are my stats.

Rank: Currently number 4 out of approximately 700 students. These last two years I finally have the opportunity to get a perfect GPA. All but one of the kids tied for first won’t be able to, however, so if I keep my grades up I’ll move up to number 2 and possibly number 1 if he screws up. I don’t plan on getting any B’s, and this semester is almost a lock for all A’s.
Tests: Haven’t taken any yet. I took the PSAT, but the results haven’t come in. I’ll definitely study hard for the SAT, and I’m looking to get a perfect or near-perfect scores in math and reading. Also: should I take the ACT? I haven’t really given the ACT any thought yet, and I’m wondering if I should give it a shot. Sophomore year we all took the PLAN (sorta like a PSAT but for the ACT, I think), and I got a 31 out of a possible 32. Is it required to take the writing section as well?
APs: World History: 3 (no credit for this one), Comp Sci: 5. Currently taking Stats and dual-credit U.S. History and English. Planning on taking Calc BC, Chem, Psychology, Government, Eco, and possibly Environmental Science senior year along with dual-credit English.

Extracurriculars
• Played football every year. Plan on playing next year as well. This was a huge time-sink, even during the offseason. Is this going to have been worth it?
• Member of the Key Club. Volunteered in all kinds of places and events like the Houston Food Bank, Rocket’s Run 2012, Korean Festival 2012, and more to come. Shooting for an officer position my senior year.
• Vice-president of Spanish Honor Society since freshman year. Going for president next year.
• Just recently got accepted into National Honor Society. Running for president for my senior year.
• Keyboardist for the church praise band since sophomore year. About 3 volunteer hours every week
• Member of the church altar service since fifth grade. Secretary my freshman year. Joined the praise band sophomore year. Don’t have a volunteer log for this one.
• Member of the church youth group. We don’t have any officer positions, but have talked about getting them this year. I’m basically a lock for one.
• Played piano since I was 5. Several awards from piano competitions, looking to get some more this year. Participated in and was leader of two piano ensembles freshman and sophomore year at a state piano convention in Dallas.
• Independently develop games in my free time. Working on one right now that I expect to rake in a couple thousand in sponsorships from online portals. Planning to compete with a few classmates in UIL computer science competitions this year, we’ll see how that goes!

Awards
• Several piano competition awards for placing. One 1st place.
• Several annual subject awards. Got it in math every year since 8th grade.
• Letters About Literature state finalist.
• Distinguished Honor Roll every year so far.

Languages
• Fluent in Korean
• Can speak Spanish at a conversational level

So that’s what I have at the moment. Is there any key thing that BHP particularly looks for in a student that I’m lacking or need to improve? Other than working really hard to get those test scores, getting more leadership positions, and keeping my rank up, what do I need to do? I love UT and BHP is my ideal major. I’d really love to be a part of it, so I appreciate your help. Thanks for your time!

Can you assume that if you got an interview for BHP that you will get into McCombs, even if you don’t get into BHP?

@rondevious

Seems like you have a pretty good shot. Get off cc :stuck_out_tongue: and focus on the December SAT (particularly CR+M). If you can boost your score to at least 2000, you should be in.

As for non business related activities detracting from acceptance, that should not be a problem. It just shows how passionate you are about your activities. My whole application was very artsy…from the activities to the writing.

@gvdrgx

Sounds like your rank and SAT are right on track. Make sure you have time for more than one test; everyone always expects to make [near] perfect scores, but it doesn’t always happen. It’s a preference thing, but I wouldn’t recommend taking the ACT if you can score well on the SAT. I never took the ACT, so I don’t know if UT requires writing. You can probably find the answer on the UT site.

Football- it will be worth it if you love it. I would say, shoot for leadership positions in all your activities, and you should be fine for McCombs. When you’re writing your r

@buckley4

No. Last year, one of my friends got a BHP interview after she submitted her apps. She wasn’t accepted to either BHP or McCombs.

just completed my application! I really hope McCombs considers me to be a worthy applicant.

Well that was quick. An hour after I submitted my complete application I got an acceptance email from UT. Obviously not accepted into McCombs yet though.

When you upload your high school transcript online, does it have to contain the seals and signatures?

@Hayacostbh

@fullmetalx

Yay, congrats, and good luck!! :)

@gaigee

Are you talking about the resume?

The school usually sends the transcripts through the online TREX system (unless OOS). To be official, the transcript should contain seals/signatures.

Thanks a million for your help, I truly appreciate it. I’ll be following your advice and hope to be a part of the program soon!

If you get rejected from the BHP, can you still be accepted into UT Austin?

Also, could you please chance me on my likelihood to get in?

Yes you can still get into UT even if you are rejected from BHP. (You will still be eligible to get into Mccomb’s or your second choice). I think you have a great shot of getting into Mccomb’s and depending on how many spots they have left for BHP you could get in there as well. Just my opinion. Best of luck!!
