BHP/McCombs Student taking questions!

Thanks so much! The admission deadline for BHP is December first, but it seems like a lot of people applied early so the seats are almost all filled? Sorry I am still a bit confused about the BHP/McComb’s/UT admission. Could you help me out? Thanks.

Those who applied by the priority deadline will be notified by dec. 7. On UT’s website they say that all applicants are evaluated the same (whether they apply early or not) but there might be a little more competition as it cuts closer to the deadline (just my opinion as I think it would be difficult to evaluate them equally if they can only accept x amount of people and they have spots filled already). Plan II specifically recommends applying priority because spots fill up. But if they are unsure about an early applicant they hold that application to compare with the regular applications. I’m not sure if BHP defers applicants or not so if they do then that could make it much easier for them to evaluate applicants equally for those who are borderline. After submitting your application, you may or may not receive an email from someone regarding an alumni interview. How soon you receive your email varies across the board but an interview is required to advance further in the application process. Many people who applied priority already received notification of admission. Your application status on my status will not reflect your admission to BHP it will only say Mccomb’s. In general, BHP rejects many students with great test scores/ gpa’s so your extracurricular involvement is extremely important. Even if you do not get into BHP as an incoming freshmen, if you do well freshmen year, it should not be to difficult for you to transfer in sophomore year. That’s all I can think of for now… I really hope this helps!! Let me know if you have any questions! Oh and if UT is your number one choice submit you housing deposit ASAP! Sorry for any typos. I’m typing from my phone…

BHP does defer - because my DD just received a letter from them saying so. She had applied late Sept, well before the priority deadline. More specifically, it said her “strong test scores and leadership skills…” (I’m paraphrasing, as I don’t have the letter with me) had moved her to the next round, and her application would be considered in the context of the entire pool they receive by Dec 1.

“Even if you do not get into BHP as an incoming freshmen, if you do well freshmen year, it should not be to difficult for you to transfer in sophomore year.”

This is incorrect. Transferring into BHP is an incredibly competitive process.

To confirm, BHP does defer.

BHP is structured the way ivies do their admissions, with an early application process (accept, reject, deferral), followed by a regular pool (accept, reject, waitlist).

Sorry for the wrong information. I was not trying to be misleading by any means. That is just what I have heard from current students in bhp.

Thanks everyone for the insights. App = submitted. We shall see.

Did your DD receive a BHP interview? If so, when and how did it go?

Just received a deferral notification from BHP priority decision. I know you said you didn’t want to chance anyone, but this has really been racking my brain the entire day so if you could let me know how likely I am to get in in the regular pool, I would be very grateful.

Scores: 2350 on SAT, 1550 composite CR and M, 800 on Math 2, 800 on US History Subject Tests. 35 on ACT
Grades: 44 out of 1560 if I remember correctly, top 2.89%, 4.3 GPA (weighted)
National Merit Semifinalist
IB Student
National AP Scholar

4th at State in Business Communications for FBLA, member for 2 years
NHS member for 4 years

I also got deferred, but my stats are no where near yours. I am very surprised that you didn’t get in those credentials are amazing. My friend who got in last year had much worse stats than you.

Honestly they look great. I would say essays were unimpressive and/or you didn’t have enough leadership. Kinda scary that you got differed since you’re test scores look good.

*deferred…

If admissions is anything like last year, then your chances are unlikely. A lot of people think that if you have high scores, you will be accepted, but every [competitive] applicant will have high scores. The high scores/rank are only for admissions to see an applicant’s work ethic and intelligence (will they be able to handle the curriculum?). BHP really values leadership experience, more so than anything else. This is what you were lacking (since you only had one leadership position). The average admit had five leadership positions last year (in addition to high scores/rank). When BHP says they turn away 2400s and vals every year, it’s not something fluffy they tell their admits to boost their egos; it’s a hard fact. However, judging by your scores, if you are really aggressive with leadership positions next year, you would probably be able to do soph transfer.

You’re right - some people got deferred after having an interview. No, my DD didn’t get an interview prior to deferral. Lowers her odds, I guess…

Update: After being deferred, my DD got contacted for, and did, an interview in mid-Dec. Now she’s awaiting a decision!

@oakalla and @utfan09 and for anyone wanting to know anything about internal transfers into McCombs:

It is all based off of GPA.

They do not look at your Q drops.

They do not look at and do not care about what college you are in.

You need 24 in residence hours at UT.

What they do for internal transfers for McCombs is they start from whoever has the highest GPA and go down and accept around 200-250 (this number is based on how many people they are accepting that year) people just strictly based off of whoever has the highest GPA. After they accept the 200-250 people. They will then compare the rest of the people based on their extracurricular activities, honors and etc. There is a very low chance of getting in if you are not accepted by your GPA. They only accept a very smalll number of people after the initial 200-250. Based on my experience, most people with 3.65 and above will be able to get in to McCombs through the GPA selection. But it honestly just depends on the people applying. If everyone has really high GPAs then it might be 3.75 or 3.8 or 3.7 or whatever. But usually, I think that if you have a 3.65 and above you should be able to get in.

For these first 200-250 people they accept based on GPA, they do not care about your q drops, your extracurricular activities, your honors and achievements. All they care about is your GPA and you have the requirements needed for the application (Micro, Macro, Calc 1, Calc 2, etc.)

So if you are planning on doing an internal transfer into McCombs, try to take as many easy classes as possible and get an A in those classes to make sure you get in.

Attend an internal transfer session and find out how many people they are accepting.

I applied for regular edition BHP and just recieved the interview email. What are my chances of getting in? What type of questions do they ask?

@fullmetalx

I can’t say your chances because no stats have ever been given on interviews. It’s probably not a bad sign though! Personally, I don’t think the interview holds much weight, so your decision is probably basically made save anything extreme happening during the interview.

The BHP interview is extremely different from most college interviews. While the other interviews I had were very conversational and enjoyable, the BHP interview was very straightforward, structured much like a job interview (in a business field). If you type McCombs interview questions or business interview questions, you can use those as a guideline. Interview questions are generally generic and you can tweak your answers to fit the question. Be prepared to offer various examples. It’s helpful to have some answers prewritten and in front of you (or memorized).

My chances for McCombs as an out of stater?
SAT: 2130 (640 math, 800 reading, 690 writing)
ACT: 31
GPA: 3.88 (unweighted)
School doesn’t rank, but my school is #1 in the state if that means anything
Extracurriculars: Tennis (co-captain, 3 varsity letters), Track (3 years outdoor & 1 year indoor), Treasurer of German Club, German exchange program, FBLA, church choir, member of a teen leadership board for this church organization
Awards: Won a state-wide team business plan competition, finalist in a local international marketing competition
Essays: Pretty good- they were interesting and had a lot of my personality in them!
Rec letters: Great I think- one was from a teacher who traveled with me on the German exchange, so it’ll be really personal and with lots about my personality

And if my chances aren’t good for McCombs, what about UT in general or it’s communication college?

Oh and all my classes are AP or honors or IB, except for regular Calc this year.
I’ve gotten all A’s, except for my junior year when I got two B’s in Honors Pre-Calc, one in I.B. German 4, and one in Honors Physics. Hopefully my senior year schedule will make up for it?
I’m taking AP Economics, AP European History, AP English, AP Psychology, I.B. German 5, and Calc
I should get all A’s!
