Bias Against Bay Area?

I not sure if this is true... but after Stanford got a new dean.. the admission rate for students applying from the bay area dropped significantly. I heard this happened at Yale too. This is what my gc told me

Unfortunately it seems to be true.

This can also happen to students from magnet or prep schools. Standford and comparable schools seem to want their pick from what they see as the top schools in each group, area, or category. Too bad for you if you are not at the top of some category, even if you are "better" than the top applicants in some other category.

Does your gc have any data or online source to substantiate that claim?
I can't find any data online regarding the admit rate of bay area applicants.

Even if you thought you had data, it might be hard to separate out any preferences for legacies, preferences for children of Stanford employees, and URMs, all of which may be disproportionately represented in the Bay Area.

Based on information in Section F of the Common Data Set, Stanford has a trend of accepting a higher percentage of out-of-state freshmen students, but the numbers are not significant and there is no evidence that this equates to significantly fewer bay area students being accepted.

60.00% Fall 2004
58.50% Fall 2003
57.26% Fall 2002
56.90% Fall 2001
57.00% Fall 2000

apparently only 6 people got into Yale EA from the Bay Area.

And where does this leave the Bay Area non-legacy, no relationship to Stanford, non URM applicant, on a relative basis to an applicant from Arkansas or NH?

well..my counselor had like 9 students apply... 8 were rejected, 1 deferred

This year, with Shaw as the new A.D. there has been a big change [drop] in the number of local kids accepted early at Stanford compared to years past- more than a 50% drop in some cases at some schools, both public and private, that have in years past sent many more kids to Stanford. None of this is published because regular decisions are not out yet.

How significant is this change? I live locally, so will this deter my chances when i apply next year?

It's too early to tell, but Shaw has made a point of wanting to " diversify" the Stanford population by trying to attract more East Coast students, ignoring the fact that East Coast kids already have many , many more top quality colleges to choose from in their own area than kids in Calif do.

Oh no. Bad news for my sophomore S. Stanford is his favorite and guess where we live:(.

ugh, i hate being screwed over by the games these colleges play. I sincerely hope this is not true.

It's true.

how do you know for sure? i know about the recent comment and what not but it just seems that every one is stressing a bit too much.

I haven't seen any substantiation for the assertion that interviews are going to be instituted as part of the process.

ditto but i can see it happening
