I was wondering... are bikes any useful at Cornell? The campus is fairly large, but people also seem to complain that it's much too hilly, in which case a bike would be more of a bother than anything.

they're all over campus, even this time of year. some parts of the campus are hilly so going up can be a pain ... but going down is a breeze and very fast.

as long as it has gears :D it's less useful when there's significant snow all over the ground, but that's really not often at all. Plus cornell does an excellent job of shoveling. I'm bringing my bike up next fall.

I was wondering about that as well. Is there a place to keep bikes, and is it expensive?

there's bike racks all over campus and many dorms have bike rooms where you can keep them out of the elements. You have to register your bike with campus police but it's free and storing them is free as well (weird to say "this is free at Cornell" but it's true!)

Just buy a quality lock.

there are bike racks outside and bike rooms inside the dorms. If your bike looks flashy or is nice you should get a nice lock (key, not combo). If your bike is only a couple hundred dollars just go with a combo lock...the effort to steal the bike isn't worth it for such a cheap one.

well, a lot of people here have them. I chose not to bring mine because everything is uphill, and it's not much use when it's snowy and/or icy.

I've never heard of Cornell charging for bike rack usage, i don't think...But there are lots of racks on campus and some dorms (the Low and High Rises) have bike storage facilities.

i keep two bikes on campus (buuuut, that's because I race for Cornell Cycling :))

There's a bike room i keep them in. I do, however, change out the wheels on my road bike. They're the easiest to steal.
