Anyone at UCSC have a full time bike they use? If so, do you lock em outside dorms / classrooms at the racks? Also, what are the chances of them being stolen / lock cut off? And have you heard any stories of bikes stolen?

My kid uses his bike all the time @ UCSC. Great close mountain biking & cruising around campus. Apparently it’s known that bikes are plentiful & easily stolen on campus. He knows students who have had theirs stolen. Best lock is a heavy duty U-lock. Lock it in safest place you can, like a bike locker or basement of dorms overnite. Locking bikes outside classrooms for short times is ok. Better quality bikes stand higher chance of being stolen. He says the same common sense rules apply there as anywhere else.

Make sure you know what you are getting yourself into before you bring your bike up to UCSC. The campus is not exactly bike friendly if you are a novice rider. There is a great area to mountain bike right behind the school though if you are into that.

I don’t think bike theft is as big of a problem as slugmom makes it out to be. I dont know anyone personally who got their bike stolen. I had my bike outside the entire year. It was never touched, and I have an above average bike.

Um…random question, but some dorms have basements??

I don’t know anyone who’s had their bike stolen either. I do know, however, a lot of people who locked their bike up the first day and never touched it. They were quite surprised to see it was still there the last week :). It’s a very bike-friendly campus though, and you won’t have any problems finding places to lock it up.

Crown college has some basement bike storage, available by lottery. After my son’s two friends had their bikes stolen, they went to an info meeting with campus police re: preventing theft. What I shared was based on what he learned at the police presentation. Theft still seems infrequent compared to how many bikes are on the campus.
