<p>I did a little web browsing and it appears that biking is allowed on some trails in the Upper Arb. Are mountain bikes recommended for those trails? Would road bikes work in the Arb? Besides the Carleton Cycling Club that fields a racing team, is there a biking club that sponsors long distance road trips? What kind of bikes do students bring to Carleton?</p>

<p>On our visit, we saw literally hundreds of bikes-20 or 30 outside of many buildings. There were all kinds, but I bet most students have a bike.</p>
<p>I know nothing about biking in the Arb, but I do know that having a basic bike is a great idea for fall and spring. I didn’t think I’d need one, but I caved and bought one from Target 4 or 5 weeks into my first term. Best purchase I’ve made all year.</p>
<p>I’m considering buying a bike as well, but when I visited, they told me about some group that goes around spraypainting (unclaimed) bikes yellow and then everyone can use them or something? Is it possible to get by on just those?</p>
<p>^No, you do NOT want to use the Yellow Bikes. Ever. They’re bikes, but only in an abstract sense. Just about every Carleton student either has or knows someone who has injured themselves on a yellow bike in a desperate attempt to get to class on time.</p>
<p>At the cashier at Goodbye Blue Monday you can purchase a book which gives the routes for a variety of longer rides in the area. The directions are very clear and warn you ahead of time where the tougher sections are. There is also a local group that rides on Saturday mornings.</p>
<p>On the upper level above Hogan Bros there is a bike shop and repair place - enter from the rear parking lot.</p>
<p>Just out of curiosity, where are the bikes stored in the winter? Is it expensive?</p>
<p>During winter term I just left my bike outside. It’s pretty easy to find a fairly sheltered bike rack where your bike can hibernate for the winter.</p>
<p>For winter break, I put my bike in my dorm room. I don’t think you’re technically supposed to do that, but nobody cares–in fact, it was my RA’s suggestion.</p>
<p>Over the summer, you can either bring your bike home with you or put it in bike storage. There are about 100 tickets available for $10 each.</p>
