...could someone rank them in order of selectivity/academic strength for me? or at least the top 5? thanks

Northwestern
Michigan
Wisconsin
Illinois
Minnesota

Here's my best shot at an overall grade, some like Purdue are good at one thing (engineering) and average at the rest.
1. Northwestern
2. Michigan
3. Illinois
4. Wisconsin
5. Ohio State
6. Minnesota
7. Indiana
8. Penn State
9. Purdue
10. Iowa
11. Michigan State

Nothing scientific, just my opinion.

hmm, the bottom five are in an interesting order. any reason for them (i don't agree or disagree, just wondering).

The rest are hard to rank.

TIER 1: Northwestern and Michigan
TIER 2: Illinois and Wisconsin
TIER 3: MSU, OSU, Purdue, Indiana, Minnesota, Iowa, PSU

Illinois ahead of Wisconsin? Not really.

Here's my ranking. And I'm not biased. At all.

[* = 2007 data]

Clearly this list only examines selectivty. :)

umm, i'm just applying to 3 or 4 big 10 schools and kinda wanted to see where they stand. mission accomplished i guess.

fhimas: thanks for the data. where did you get the 2007 stats from? i wanna look them up. thanks

I only have information from Michigan and NU - it's from the 'Hernandez Counseling' site. She has data from all the most competitive schools for the class of 2011.

ok, what's that URL? Do you have to be a member or something to access it? thanks again

acceptance rates are misleading. look at the incoming student profile in addition to the acceptance rates. here are the middle 50th% SAT ranges from college board (don't know if they're outdated but still).

Penn State- Math 560-660, Critical Reading 520-620
Illinois- M 620-740, CR 540-670
Ohio State- M 560-670, 530-640
Indiana- M 510-630, CR 490-610
Purdue- M 530-650, CR 490-600
Northwestern- M 670-760, CR 650-740
Michigan- M 630-730, CR 580-690
Minnesota- M 580-690, CR 540-670
Iowa- M 540-670, CR 520-650
Wisconsin- M 610-710, CR 560-670
Michigan State- M 530-600, CR 500-630

I can tell you that the acceptance percentage for Ohio State drops to 52% with the 2007 class. That's what the e-mail that I received said; although, someone else has said that it's 56%. In either case, it drops. Some other numbers on the 2007 freshman class are:

Top tenth of hs class: 56%
Top quarter of hs class: 93%
Average ACT 28.4
Middle 50% of ACT score: 26-30

Is this 2007 OSU information available on the site? Regardless, the 10 year profile numbers are shooting up like a rocket. OSU is getting to be of a match than safety these days.
