Okay,
So as many of your other students on here, I got accepted to a boarding school. YAY! blah blah.

Okay, well I really need help because I don't know how I am getting there.
Not as in I don't know if I should take the plane or something , no, I don't know how I am getting on the plane , as in too expensive.

Well I asked the school if they could help, they said no, so now I'm really scared because I don't know what's going to happen.

Can anyone give me advice(and I can't ride with anyone because I live on the West Coast and the school is on the east coast)=(

Your family should have thought about all the expenses prior to applying/enrollment. What are you going to do for the Thanksgiving, Christmas, Spring breaks? That will require $ as well. In addition, there will be money needed for fees, books, other extras or did you get financial aid to cover those expenses?

How about earning some money this summer? Babysitting, dog walking, lawn care, etc. are all options for young teens.

I really don’t think the school could have said no to the request for a plane ticket. So if you don’t show up for school in September they will just blame it on you…call them again. I am sure any boarding school regardless of endowment/size would be willing to pay for a new student’s plane ticket, so they could have a chance to attend the school especially when the student’s parents have already started paying tuition.

What school is it? Maybe I can knock them into shape for you…;)

urban–lots of kids get FA that covers a hefty percentage of tuition, room and board, but not other stuff like travel. Has inyxtee said he’s on full financial aid? Even in that case, I don’t know that there’s a guarantee that schools will cover travel.

I fee like there’s a missing piece here. If you watch fare sales, the price of a one-way ticket from the West to the East Coast is not that expensive. As a parent, I just can’t imagine going through that whole boarding school application process with my kid and then saying, “Oh, really, we have to pay to get you there? Well, deal’s off then kiddo.” ( OTOH, I could see a parent saying that flying home for Thanksgiving or spring break would be too expensive) So what’s the full story?

Yeah, I don’t think the price of a plane trip from the West to the East is that expensive. Maybe you should try a train or bus or a long road trip? You’d also have to go home during thanksgiving and winter break. I agree with classicalmama, whats the full story??

I think you misunderstood me. I did not say that inyxtee is on FA. I meant that when parents have already started paying tuition and they really can’t afford to fly them to the school, most schools would cover the cost of the plane ticket no matter their endowment. Most school have special funds set up just in case something like this were to happen.

I think Greyhound has a bus that goes from west to east coast. Also, I would call the boarding school again, and email them if they say no again. Maybe you family could take out a loan? Were you planning on staying with friends on the east coast during breaks. This just doesn’t seem real. Why would your parents apply to boarding school and never consider the distance? Were they never going to see you again?

Right now, round trip flights from LAX to BOS are under $400. Of course the cost depends on where you’re coming from and where you’re going. What airports are you departing from and arriving at, and at what time must you arrive? Perhaps some of the more experienced road warriors here can help you find a good fare. I assume a parent will be traveling with you on the way out, which obviously adds to the expense. (How did you manage to visit the schools? )

I don’t think OP can’t afford the travel expense. It sounds like he’s soliciting ideas on how to save the money. If my guess is true then that’s not good.

Im a she not a he, and yes I really can’t afford to fly there thank you very much. But anyway. Never Mind Forget I asked. I will find my own way, the board doesnt like to help anyway just criticize

She’ll go because tuition is non refundable and if she doesn’t show up her parents are still on the hook for the entire year. Plus, Southwest flies out of a lot of West Coast airports and has frequent sales that are super cheap. Not to mention if you put their “Ding” on your desktop they will send periodic messages about unadvertised fares to sell unsold seats.

I don’t think there are many that would apply to boarding school and not consider the travel constraints. If there is a change in family circumstances, the school may take that into consideration, but the reality is that boarding school is a privilege and they like to see their students and parents contribute something towards the experience except in extreme financial situations.

Those “endowments” come from alumni and other donors so it’s not money out of “thin air.” So I think it was legitimate to ask why that wasn’t an issue at the time the family applied.

I agree - might have been a solicitation. But it also could have been a plea for real information on resources. I know of many who - caught up in the romance of going to a boarding school - forget about the ancillary expenses.
