My son applied to Fordham, Seton Hall and Ramapo. He was accepted to all three. He received his scholarships from Seton Hall and Ramapo. Have not heard back from Fordham yet
Seton Hall would cost us 15,000 a year and Ramapo would be a full ride.
He still has his heart set on Seton Hall

$$ aside, I think name recognition, Fordham wins; location Seton Hall is probably the best - nice town to walk to, train to NYC. Ramapo is a little remote, and Fordham is not in the best neighborhood.

Is 15,000 a year too much for your family? How much debt would your son/your family be in?

15,000 would be a little much…really trying to do it with no loans since he is planning to go to medical school
He is willing to commute so we do not have to worry about housing
But when I think we would save 60,000 if he went to Ramapo

If you can afford $15,000 without excessive loans ($5,500 I assume) and the best fit is Seton Hall, then Seton Hall is a good choice for him, especially since he’s willing to compromise and live at home (would he also live at home if he went to Ramapo or would he live on campus?) That’s a pretty big sacrifice to make for a college student and it shows he’s serious about Seton Hall. I assumed you okayed the colleges he applied to, so it means you were willing to fund him if it was within budget. It may be tempting to say “forget what I said earlier, the full tuition/full ride scholarship erases my earlier words”, but that’s not how it works (well, unless you’re the sort of person who breaks their word including to their kids and don’t think it’s a big deal, but I don’t think you’d have posted about it if you were that person).
One point in favor of Ramapo is that more students graduate in 4 years (54% SH, 70% Ramapo).
Have him go visit and attend class, sit in the cafeteria, listen to conversations, meet with professors in his chosen field at each school, etc. He may change his mind or become even more determined.
Wait until you have Fordham’s decision though. You never know.

Thank you for your response.
He would also commute to Ramapo. He also really liked it when we toured.
The extra money from his scholarship could be used for a meal plan and parking.
I told him we will find a way for SH if that is his decision but will it be worth the 60,000.
Does Ramapo compare to Seton Hall?

I have heard great things about Ramapo and everyone I have spoken to who goes there is very happy.
We are going to do admitted student’s day
