Big Ed Dilemma

Okay, I have a problem.

I am a senior at a competitive public high school in Massachusetts, and I am having severe anxiety about the college admissions process.

Tufts University has been my first choice ever since I visited at the end of my soph. year. My stats are fairly within range for Tufts:

SAT I: M: 690 V: 650 W: 650 (a little low)
SAT II: Math IIC: 700, US History: 720, Literature: 670

GPA: 100.5 (weighted) 91.4 unweighted
Rank: 8/106
Good EC's (student council president, a lot of comm. service, etc..)
Good Recs (alumni recommendations as well)

I pretty much had it all figured out by September, that I would apply early decision to tufts and hopefully get in.

Now for my dilemma:
at the end of september I went to look at colleges in Maine, and I fell in love with Bates College. I loved everything about it, the people, the atmosphere, the curriculum, the architecture, I could not find a flaw.

Now I cant find the courage to apply ED to Tufts, when I love Bates so much, but I am aware that without the benefit of ED I have a lesser chance of admission at both schools.

My high school is also very close with Bates, and several students attend each year (very few attend Tufts), The Bates ED admission rate soars from 30% RD to 80% ED, where as the Tufts rate goes from about 26% RD to 43% ED.

I feel like I have a much better chance of getting into Bates, and It would relieve so much stress, and allow me to enjoy my Senior Year. But on the other hand, Tufts is a better school, and I feel like it would give me more opportunities in the long run, I also still love Tufts just as much as Bates. I love how Tufts is near Boston, but I also love how Bates is near the mountains (I love to ski).

If anyone has any suggestions, please respond

Your GPA is INFLATED!

Where did you get those ED stats for Bates????

I must know...cause I have never seen those.

I love Bates too...I want to go there more than anything in the world...I can totally understand your reasoning.

glucose101 "Your GPA is INFLATED!", are you canadian? I used to think like you, but then i realized that people may do well in school and not well on tests(i.e. SAT)

Doesnt Tufts have ED II? Also, you should pick your ED school on where you WANT to go, not where you think you will get in.

yeah its not 80% i exaggerated, its like 57% I just mean that its a lot more than tufts...and tufts does have ED II. But anyways it is a moot point now, becuase I applied ED I to Bates so I hope I get in. I decided I liked the atmosphere and location more (I love to ski), and I feel like it had a more laid back vibe, also I like the smaller size. Also, Tufts has a lot of foreign language requirements that I decided didn't interest me. Anyways if I dont get into bates ED I, i might try Tufts ED II (if that makes sense?)

Makes perfect sense Abby - good luck.

the bates ED acceptance rate is NOT 80%!!!! its a little shy of 50.

also its v. hard to judge tufts vs. bates, one is a U, the other a 1700-student college, they are totally different, i wouldnt say one if better than the other.
