i'm wondering how the big law firm culture is like. how are the relationships like between the lawyers and what's the environment like?

also, i'm thinking about all the social skills and non-job related aspects that helps one keep a client or maintain better relations with the partners (or making partner!).

what kind of soft skills or social skills should i brush up upon? i'm pretty sure playing golf. what are some others? (or does this not matter; is making partner based only on work ability and not on your relationship with the other partners?)

Often, it depends upon the location (city) of the firm and from what schools the firm gets its associates from.

Generally speaking, many associates aren't terribly happy in big firms. However, many stay on because the renumeration is so good. Hard to turn down the big paycheck. Finally, it you love your work or specialization, you clearly will be happy in any location.

this is what a business lawyer told me at a career-day event at my school: "many people picture lawyers to be angry people who scream at one another and argue, but in business law, it's not really like that, because we're honestly trying to find a solution for both of the parties involved...." so , is this true ? are most lawyers, no matter what the specialization argumentative and pugnacious ? Is the competition really cut-throat at big firms ?
