Big List of MT Colleges by Program Type

I started with the Big List of MT Colleges (the infamous Post #2) already on CC, of which I am so very thankful for. I removed graduate programs and any programs outside of the U.S. I sorted the schools into categories: Non-Audition BA’s/BM’s, Non-Audition BFA’s, Audition BA’s/BM’s, Audition BFA’s, and BA-to-BFA programs. Please be aware that many non-audition schools may require an audition to be considered for scholarships. Also, I urge you to do your research – there are many BA programs that act like BFA’s, and many BFA programs that have full general education requirements. Look at the curriculum, read the CC posts, and talk to current students and professors to find the right match.

Following the name of the school in parentheses is a note if the program is other than a BA or BFA in MT, the state where the school is located, and in some cases, the number of students the school yields each year. I have done away with the mark of a + to indicate difficulty of admittance. Most audition programs are very difficult to get in to. Some are not quite as difficult, but cut students. Again, do your research. I added an * if the school requires a pre-screening DVD/digital upload to be invited to audition.

Please do not use this thread as a discussion on the various programs. Let’s keep it as much of a pure resource as possible.

For the most part, the details on this list were compiled by previous CC moderators and updated by parents. Please help to keep this list updated. If you know of any colleges that offer a musical theater degree that are not listed on this page, if you know a school has changed from BA to a BFA or vice versa, or you know the number of students in an entering freshman class, please copy and paste and mark your change in red. If you prefer, you can PM me and I will make the change. I hope this helps!

I did not do a comprehensive check to see if you were missing all of them.

Just a note, at California State University - Fullerton there is no longer an audition for freshmen. (At least there wasn’t one this past year)

And, I am almost positive that admission to the BFA program at the University of California - Irvine requires an audition. (I think that students enter for the non-audition BA in Drama and must audition later)

I will combine lists, but it will take a while to research if these are audition programs or not.

Sheridan College listed as being in WY. It’s actually in Ontario, Canada.
We could also add Dalhousie University’s (Nova Scotia, Canada) combined BA Honours in Music and Theatre.
Edit: I noticed in your first post you said that you removed all graduate programs and programs outside the US. I don’t think that’s very wise, as CC is a resource for many international students/students who already have a college degree.

Shaun0203 - What a lot of work you did!!! Thank you!!! I am hoping this can be tagged and pinned at the top eventually! This is very, very handy and up to date! It is going to save folks a lot of time!!! CollegeMom is the moderator for this forum, so you might want to find and email her about what you did. I do agree with the idea that you need to add the international schools back in, as the British schools participate in Unifieds and many U.S. students do end up attending them.

UC Irvine is a BA-BFA, not a non-audition BFA. And Point Point is an audition BA-BFA isn’t is?

Shorter College is now Shorter University. Their BFA in MT is by audition. You have it listed in the nonaudition BFA category.

I would prefer to keep this list just to Undergrad programs, since it is already so big and would be used by different people, but I agree it makes sense to add international undergraduate programs. There only was one or two on the Big List I started with. If anyone has a list of, or would like to start a list, of international programs and PM me, I will add them to this big list. Please make sure that it has degree type, location, and if it requires an audition. I will change the details for Shorter, Sheridan, UC Irvine and Point Park next time I post an update. Canadian MTGirl - is Dalhousie audition or non-audition?

Thanks for all the input - that’s the only way we can keep this list accurate!
Christie - I had tried contacting CollegeMom before I started the list but didn’t hear back. Maybe I will try again once we’ve updated it a few times if she doesn’t tag it as Important on her own.

To be admitted to Dalhousie, one must interview with the Theatre department and audition for the Music department. At the end of first year, one must successfully gain entrance to Theatre 2800, a sophomore-level course, to progress to the second year. It’s a very selective program, aiming to only take 5 students/year.

I’m also in the process of speaking with Dal to see if you can substitute the BA in Theatre for the BA in Acting (which also requires earning a place in Theatre 2800 for the second year) in this combined Honours major. I’ll get back to you on that.

If I’m not mistaken, both Northern Kentucky and Western Kentucky are now both auditioned BFA programs.

Shaun, in doing some research today on UK programs, only the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, in Glasgow, offers a BA in Musical Theatre, audition for admission. It auditions regularly at Unifieds in NYC and Chicago as well as accepting DVD’s, altho if DVD meets callback, may also need to audition at Unifieds or in Scotland.

The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff offers a BA (audition at Unifieds) and an MA in Musical Theatre (also audition at Unifieds).

There are a number of other colleges in the UK that offer degrees in MT (hard to tell as they term them ‘courses’) but are not particularly aimed toward international students and usually don’t offer overseas auditions.

Thanks for doing this! A couple of edits/additions: I do not believe Northeastern gives a BM with a minor in MT…it is either a BA or a BS. If you are looking for numbers, BoCo is looking for a class of 50 (they accept 55 or more to yield 50); Ithaca, 16 (they accept more to yield this). Mountview Academy in London is another international program …they give a BA (Hons) in MT in 3 years.

In addition to Mountview and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, the Guildford School of Acting in the UK offers an MT degree (3 Yr BA Hons/National Diploma in Musical Theare) and I believe that they do USA auditions.

The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art has a 2 yr program in MT (not sure if they audition in the USA).

The Conference of Drama Schools in the UK includes (I think) all the accredited programs:

Witchita State is now an audition program (BFA).

Ouchita Baptist Univ is in Arkansas (AR), not Alaska (AK)

Oh, and I forgot to mention that Berklee College of Music now has a MT minor.

This is really hard work and I feel bad but there’s an error - Northwestern University is not a state school and it’s state is Illinois. Also, it’s complicated a bit because the straight Theatre degree is a BA or BS with no audition but the MT Certificate program requires an audition at the end of Freshman or Sophomore year.
