Big List of MT Colleges by Program Type

Shaun, thank you for all the time and effort in doing this! It will make it so much nicer for people to use.

Re: AMTC’s post above, there is indeed a Northwestern State in Louisiana with the MT degree Shaun lists. Northwestern in Evanston is listed under the BA-to-BFA programs. Again, many thanks to Shaun–this reflects a TON of research!

This is a great list and as no one person can research all the details…IT TAKES A CC COMMUNITY… here are two changes someone can make the next time they update.

UNLV - Surprisingly, the Las Vegas school does not have an undergraduate degree in MT, though it does have a master’s. Here is a link to the undergrad degrees - [Department of Theatre | University of Nevada, Las Vegas](http://theatre.unlv.edu/)

Memphis now has its own BFA track in MT. There is still a Theater Performance degree but MT is separate as those students get dance and private voice. Here is the link - [Theatre and Dance :: Musical Theatre Program :: University of Memphis](http://www.memphis.edu/theatre/Musicaltheatre.php)

Lots of eye crossing detailed work to compile and organize a list like this. Easy to inadvertently miss schools. University of the Arts in Pennsylvania offers audition based BFA in MT, BFA in Acting w/MT Minor, and BFA in Dance w/MT Minor.

Michael - UArts is listed under β€œAudition BFA’s”

EmsDad, looks like I went cross eyed just reading the list let alone assembling it!

Wow - what a job!!! I’m wondering if list would be easier to read if BAs and BMs are made separate lists? Just a thought. I see the two programs as very different. Love the fact that you’ve separated out BA to BFA - brilliant!! Love also that you’ve starred the pre-screens. Another thought - I couldn’t find CCM at first - I see that it’s listed as University of Cincinnati - I think it might be found easier as CCM as I think that is how it’s usually referred to. CCMs incoming class of 2012 is 18 - 9 girls and 9 boys. I believe they initially accepted 9 girls and 15 or so boys - so 24 initially accepted. Eventually, a couple of boys and a couple of girls were accepted from the wait list. If anyone finds it useful - CCM lost kids to U Mich, CMU, and Texas State.

Bump - If anyone can get a moderator to mark this list as β€œImportant,” I think it could help a lot of newbies.

Just a detail, but Otterbein is now Otterbein University.

Unlike the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Mountview and Guildford, the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama does NOT offer a BA (hons) in Musical Theatre. They do offer an MA in MT.

Maybe the best way to do this is too update the current Big List by state, and then to cut and paste the Big List by program type into the same (currently pinned) thread)? That way all of the information is there for people to cross reference.

EmsDad -

Just checked. Guildford does offer the BA Hons in MT or the National Diploma in Professional MT.
[GSA - Schools and Courses](Conservatoire.org)

Next time you see the list, Royal Welsh will have been removed.

KatMT - I agree it would be helpful to have both lists active and updated. I don’t know how often the original Big List by State gets updated or the best way to update both simultaneously.

I think all lists are updated by volunteers (like you! THANK YOU!) who take on the project. Post #2 on the Big List can only be updated by a moderator. I think any member could cut and paste that list in Post #2, update it, and re-post it on the thread as a new comment.

:)

I took this updated list, reformatted it into the β€œold” format, and pasted it into the β€œBig List”:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/musical-theater-major/801037-big-list-mt-colleges.html</a></p>

I included a cross-link to this thread.

I just posted this on the β€œBig List” too, but wanted to add here for those looking at it by type:

While looking at safeties for my D (a rising senior), I discovered that Catawba (NC) now has a non-audition BA and an audition BFA.

[Theatre Arts: Majors and Minors](http://www.catawba.edu/academic/theatrearts/majors.asp)

Thanks so much to those of you who work to update these lists for those of us who are just now embarking on the crazy ride called the β€œMT Application/Audition process!!”

Changes made per the above comments, and also added an * to indicate Penn State now requires a pre-screening DVD.

Next update will include an * on Coastal Carolina. They now pre-screen.

With regard to Rollins College, I don’t think an audition is required for admission. Rather, there is an optional audition in February if you want to be considered for a scholarship.

Thanks Soozievt, I will change the next time I post a revised list.

I don’t know where this misconception that you can do a BFA acting and get the MT minor from the University of Southern California came from (and I’ve seen it multiple places), but for most students, it’s not possible, due to the intense credit load of both the BFA and the MT minor.

USC has a 27-unit minor in musical theatre. It is quite compatible with a BA Theatre or most other BAs from USC. It is not compatible with a BFA from the School of Theatre.
