Big List of MT Colleges by Program Type

Thanks, MT Coach. That list is helpful. Southwestern is listed but only as a BFA in Theater…LOL. I think we will just have to apply (another essay–aargh!) and sort it out later. If they end up not offering MT, we will just take them off our list later. UT (Austin)is another school that is transitioning too. (Sort of adding MT for next year, but it’s early days, and unsettled, to put it nicely).

Nova Southeastern University (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) offers a BA in Musical Theater through their Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences. I looked at the program and catalog online and couldn’t find any audition requirements.

I don’t know anything about the program-- only found out about it because husband is a law school grad from there, and a mention of the program was in the latest booklet we received from them.

Maybe add to the Non-Audition list?

OK, next update will include it - thanks.

I started with the Big List of MT Colleges (Post #2) already on CC, of which I am so very thankful for. I removed graduate programs. I sorted the schools into categories: Non-Audition BA’s/BM’s, Non-Audition BFA’s, Audition BA’s/BM’s, Audition BFA’s, and BA-to-BFA programs. Please be aware that many non-audition schools may require an audition to be considered for scholarships. Also, I urge you to do your research – there are many BA programs that act like BFA’s, and many BFA programs that have full general education requirements. Look at the curriculum; read the CC posts, and talk to current students and professors to find the right match.

Following the name of the school in parentheses is a note if the program is other than a BA or BFA in MT, the state where the school is located, and in some cases, the number of students the school yields each year. I have done away with the mark of a + to indicate difficulty of admittance. Most audition programs are very difficult to get in to. Some are not quite as difficult, but cut students. Do your research. I added an * if the school requires a pre-screening DVD to be invited to audition.

Please do not use this thread as a discussion on the various programs. Let’s keep it as much of a pure resource as possible.

For the most part, the details on this list were compiled by CC moderators and updated by parents. Please help to keep this list updated. If you know of any colleges that offer a musical theater degree that are not listed on this page, if you know a school has changed from BA to a BFA or vice versa, or you know the number of students in an entering freshman class, please copy and paste and mark your change in red. If you prefer, you can PM me and I will make the change. I hope this helps!

Thanks for updating the list. A few notes:

Rider University is transitioning from BM to BFA but has not been approved yet. Most likely all new applicants will graduate BFA.

Also, Pace University requires a pre-screen.

Johnson State College now requires either a DVD or online video audition to accompany the application for the BA Musical Theatre program.

DeSales is actually an audition school although that is not clear from the online/website information. My daughter recently auditioned at that school, so I spent plenty of time talking to the staff ensuring that I clearly understood all the requirements. The website led me to believe that the audition was for scholarship only, but upon further emails and phone calls, it is now an audition-based school

Lon Morris College is no longer in operation. They declared bankruptcy in May, ceased operations, and the school is up for auction.

University of Hawaii (Manoa Campus) has a BA Degree in Music with an emphasis on Musical Theatre.
The program is not as strong as ones on the mainland I believe (due to separation/not as much film/theatre opportunities), but is still something to those living in Hawaii that are inexperienced and do have the money or scholarships to afford schooling in the mainland.

The program has changed, so this now should probably say “audition early in 1st year for Mt Certificate”.

Western Connecticut State University does require auditions (they have for years). You receive a provisional acceptance into the school first - then have to audition into MT. In prior years they have only accepted about 7 a year. I heard last year they took 13 or 14 and that they may be doing that going forward. If you don’t get into MT but go to the school you can re-audition your sophmore year.

bumping for the newbies

Nebraska Wesleyan is no longer non-audition. The information on the website is not up to date from what I could find, but I had a student apply there as a non-audition safety and was told she needed to audition at Unifieds as a new requirement this year.

The University of Texas at Austin now offers a BA in Theatre and Dance with a Musical Theatre emphasis - admission by audition (only 6 admitted per year).

[Musical Theatre - Department of Theatre & Dance | The University of Texas at Austin](http://www.utexas.edu/finearts/tad/undergraduate/ba-theatre-dance/musical-theatre)

UT is also going to offer an audition-for-entry BFA in Acting beginning in 2014.

Bumping for the newbies. This format helped me so much in my search!

MODERATORS - PLEASE CONSIDER PINNING!

I added an * if the school requires a pre-screening to be invited to audition.

Please do not use this thread as a discussion on the various programs. Let’s keep it as much of a pure resource as possible.
