Big List of MT Colleges by Program Type

Perfect timing on that Columbia College note as I was just about to post an update incorporating the above notes and those on the Big List by State. I think they Columbia College used to be completely non-audition, but I will now move them to BA-to-BFA. Thanks!

I started with the Big List of MT Colleges already on CC, of which I am so very thankful for. I removed graduate programs. I sorted the schools into categories: Non-Audition BA’s/BM’s, Non-Audition BFA’s, Audition BA’s/BM’s, Audition BFA’s, and BA-to-BFA programs. Please be aware that many non-audition schools may require an audition to be considered for scholarships. Also, I urge you to do your research – there are many BA programs that act like BFA’s, and many BFA programs that have full general education requirements. Look at the curriculum; read the CC posts, and talk to current students and professors to find the right match.

Following the name of the school in parentheses is a note if the program is other than a BA or BFA in MT, the state where the school is located, and in some cases, the number of students the school yields each year. I have done away with the mark of a + to indicate difficulty of admittance. Most audition programs are very difficult to get in to. Some are not quite as difficult, but cut students. Do your research. I added an * if the school requires a pre-screening to be invited to audition.

Please do not use this thread as a discussion on the various programs. Let’s keep it as much of a pure resource as possible.

For the most part, the details on this list were compiled by CC moderators and updated by parents. Please help to keep this list updated. If you know of any colleges that offer a musical theater degree that are not listed on this page, if you know a school has changed from BA to a BFA or vice versa, or you know the number of students in an entering freshman class, please copy and paste and mark your change in red. If you prefer, you can PM me and I will make the change. I hope this helps!

Updates: UCF now requires a pre-screen; In BA-to-BFA section: SMU offers an auditioned MT Minor to Voice, Acting or Dance Majors; In BA-to-BFA section: North Dakota State Univeristy; Columbia College still offers BA Theatre with MT Concentration, but now also offers an auditioned BFA-MT with auditions at end of 2nd semester so school is listed in both places

Great minds, Shaun, great minds! Thanks!

For a future update, Northwestern University (Il) also offers an auditioned BM. Both those in the auditioned BM and in the Theatre BA program may audition for the MT Certificate program.

MomCares - It already shows that in the BA-to-BFA section. Should it be stated in a different way?

I did see it there, but wasn’t sure if maybe it should also be included on the list of auditioned BM programs, since that is a different route to NU’s auditioned MT Certificate. It’s probably not important, but NU is an option for those only interested in auditioned BM programs with an MT focus.

Suggested correction: Northeastern Univ. in Boston does not require an audition, and you can take a BA/BS in Theatre with a minor in MT.

The MT minor can also be combined with one of three BS or BA degrees in Music, which are non-audition also (History, Industry, Comp & Technology) - only requirement is a portfolio review for the BS in Music Comp & Technology:

Thanks for this list - very helpful!!

Shaun: What a terrific labor of love! Thank you for the efforts in researching and representing the various MT programs. Terrific!!!

Calif State University Fullerton tried intake auditions 3 years ago, but haven’t done any since (and don’t plan to). Just wanted to put that out there, and the reason why… We found that after our first offers failed to accept admission offer (without notice to us of their intent to go elsewhere), it was too late for those on the waitlist to accept their admission offers.

Thank you, again!

I noticed that Seton Hill University (in Greensburg, PA) is missing under the list of BFA MT audition schools. They’re accepting 4 boys and 4 girls this year for that program. Would you please add them to the list?

Prof Himmelheber: Being the β€œkeeper of the list” is my pleasure - an opportunity to give back a little to the CC community after all the help I received when my daughter was going thru the audition process. Can you please tell us if Cal State U Fullerton is on the list properly? I show that the school is a non-auditioned BA, but requires an audition after the 2nd year?

DoReMiMom - I had Seton Hill as an auditioned BA. I wonder if that was an error or if they recently switched to BFA. Either way, next time I post an update I will show it as BFA. Thanks for the info!

psa6819 - Thanks, I will add Northeastern to the list of non-auditioned BAs

Any other updates?

Thanks Shaun. Seton Hill offers BFA MT and BA MT. The kids who audition for BFA and aren’t accepted are sometimes invited for the BA. I’m not sure when they started requiring auditions, but I’m hearing it’s now very competitive. The audition was fairly long with dance, vocals, and monologues for a panel of 5 or 6. At my daughter’s audition, they said they plan on accepting 4-5 boys and 4-5 girls. The school is beautiful and they’ve put a ton of money into the performing arts facilities and they plan to continue building. The Dept does 6 shows a year, and the students have a lot of opportunities to work with local community theater as well.

University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) is a BA-BFA program. Students take several intro-level classes in the first year and can then be considered for admission to the BFA program if they would like.

lovetoact: The UMBC website shows that the BA-BFA program is for Acting. I do not see a MT track there, so I have left it off the list. If there is a new MT program, please let us know. Thanks!

Updates: Northeastern U offers a MT Minor alongside various Majors that do NOT require auditions. Seton Hill now offers an auditioned BFA in addition to the auditioned BA so is listed in both places

Hi! I can’t locate any info on the U Akron site re a musical theater program, in theater or in music. Diverse music degrees, none MT, and theater is standard BA theater.

I can’t find it either. I wonder if they ever had it or not, but next time we update the list it should drop off.

I believe Akron has dropped their theater program from a major to only available as a minor
