Okay, here’s one -

Saint Edward’s University in Austin, Texas, is adding an MT specialization this year. Just in time for my D, clearly. Ha! If they’d had this two years ago we might not have felt it necessary to even look at other schools, but, that’s okay, because I think there was a lot of important stuff to learn in the process of auditioning, and I have always been wary of picking a school by default instead of informed choice. At any rate, she must have been meant for it because it now seems like such an obvious fit!

At St Ed’s, you can audition for money, but admittance is non audition - however, they DO have a review after completing the Theater core, to assure you are going into the best area of specialization for your talent, if you want Acting or Musical Theater. I very much prefer a non auditioned BA program to have a review like this. It is not capped, but based on the progress and talent of the individual.

In addition to the new MT specialization, the other specializations (and they do have a general theater option also) are Acting, Design, and - one of rather few undergrad Arts Administration degrees in the country. (which is nice to have those options, because you never know, sometimes they find out to their surprise that they have fallen in love with a different aspect of theater. It can happen!)

It is a BA, but for MT, the ratio of core classes to major classes is just about 50/50 which is also just about the perfect fit for my D.

There is also a rumor that none other than UT is going to start an MT program…so keep an eye out - they always swore they would never do that (hassles with co-ordinating the departments is what I heard.)

I think that all the buzz about Texas State, which is just down the road from Austin, is making everyone else stand up and take notice, out here in the Lone Star State. I think that can end up being a good thing for us all.
