Big List of MT Colleges: By State

Beginning this semester, Cal State University Northridge (CSUN) has a new Musical Theatre Minor through the Mike Curb College of Arts Media & Communication, Department of Theatre and Department of Music

I just e-mailed NYU Steinhardt about their graduate MT program, and they told me it was an MM, not an MA.

Also it looks like Tulane University in New Orleans offers an MFA.

Please add University of Utah BFA Musical Theatre

mttwins- so glad to see CSUN has added an MT minor!!! Their voice program is excellent and we need all the MT programs we can get here in CA. Too late for us but a great addition.

I was misinformed about the University of Memphis. They have now added a BFA Musical Theatre Program which you MUST audition for to be accepted and they only take 15 people.

Please add two schools…

Louisiana:
Northwestern State University - BS in Theatre with MT concentration (It is located in Natchitoches, the town featured in Steel Magnolias) (non audition)

[NSU | Theatre and Dance | Welcome to Northwestern Theatre and Dance](<a href=“NSU Theatre & Dance – Northwestern State University”>http://theatre.nsula.edu/)

Mississippi:
University of Southern Mississippi - BA in Theatre with MT “Professional Training” (Located in Hattiesburg. Also has BFAs in Theatre & Dance, and Dance minor) (non audition)

[CoAL - Theatre and Dance](http://www.usm.edu/theatre/musical.php)

Also add Western Michigan University
[WMU Theatre Music Theatre Performance](http://www.wmich.edu/theatre/prospective-students/programs/music-theatre-performance/)

Actrase, Western Michigan University is already on the Big List (see posts 1 and 2 on this thread…that constitutes the “Big List of MT Colleges”).

It looks as though Metropolitan State College of Denver DOES require an audition. It is listed as not requiring an audition, but when I was on their web site, it said an audition is needed, and I e-mailed the department to confirm.

Also, it looks like DeSales and Brenau now also have mandatory auditions; they are listed as non-audition. I was just e-mailing to make sure, since I’m looking at non-audition programs.

Please update Oakland University in Michigan. It is now a BFA program.

Please add or update the following programs (I’ve checked each college website to insure correct information)

Nonaudition:

Alabama-University of Mobile BM MT
Florida - Rollins College - BA Theatre w/MT concentration
Illinois - North Central College - BA MT (nonaudition!)
Missouri - Culver Stockton College BFA MT (yes, this is a nonaudition BFA)
New York - Skidmore College - BS in Dance/Theatre
South Dakota - Northern State BA MT

Audition:

Florida - University of Tampa BA MT
Idaho - Univeristy of Idaho BFA MT
Illinois - Southern Illinois University BFA MT
Michigan - Oakland University BFA MT
Minnesota - University of Minnesota Duluth BFA MT - audition end of freshman year
Missouri - Lindenwood University BFA MT,
Stephens College BFA Theatre w/ emphasis in MT audition 2nd semester
North Carolina - Lees McRae College BFA MT
North Dakota - University of North Dakota BFA MT
Pennsylvania - Clarion College BFA MT - audition as freshman or sophomore
Utah - University of Utah - BFA MT

In addition to my earlier post, could you please change Texas State University to an audition BFA program. Thanks!

Re: Post #93:
You may wish to notice that the most up to date list is POST #2. Texas State is listed there as an audition BFA program. Non-audition programs have a “~” next to them and TSU doesn’t.

My personal opinion is that a school like Skidmore would not be on the list or else this list would have to grow and grow to include all BA in Theater programs where one might be able to double major in theater and music or theater and dance. That is the case at Skidmore, which does not have a BA in MT per se.

Thanks for the reminder, Soozie. Somehow I got sidetracked onto Post #1 about Texas State. I know what you mean about Skidmore, but if that’s the case, there’s a few others that should come off the list, like Southern Oregon (my own state!) as there is no MT training there at all!!! Just thought that perhaps a theatre/dance program might make a good backup for someone . . . . whatever!

Was also thinking it would be a good idea to get this list as close as possible to what’s all out there, since it’s probably the only one of it’s kind, and my, how the numbers needing it are growing!!! May also save us some time on answering questions about ‘what nonaudition programs are out there’ I went through your earlier references to add to it, also.

I totally know what you mean about Skidmore and schools of that sort for non-audition as I recommend them all the time to advisees. I’m just not sure that the Big List which was set up for true MT programs is where those would go (cause it would be miles long). There are some threads about non-audition schools that are not BAs in MT exactly.

I think it is great that you found many other MT programs not already on the Big List. I hadn’t heard of those myself! There are so many kids wanting to major in MT and so it can’t hurt that there are more programs available.

Anyway, it’s true that I haven’t seen another comprehensive list of college MT programs as exists on this thread on CC. I think this forum is the best resource. :D

Okay, here’s one -

Saint Edward’s University in Austin, Texas, is adding an MT specialization this year. Just in time for my D, clearly. Ha! If they’d had this two years ago we might not have felt it necessary to even look at other schools, but, that’s okay, because I think there was a lot of important stuff to learn in the process of auditioning, and I have always been wary of picking a school by default instead of informed choice. At any rate, she must have been meant for it because it now seems like such an obvious fit!

At St Ed’s, you can audition for money, but admittance is non audition - however, they DO have a review after completing the Theater core, to assure you are going into the best area of specialization for your talent, if you want Acting or Musical Theater. I very much prefer a non auditioned BA program to have a review like this. It is not capped, but based on the progress and talent of the individual.

In addition to the new MT specialization, the other specializations (and they do have a general theater option also) are Acting, Design, and - one of rather few undergrad Arts Administration degrees in the country. (which is nice to have those options, because you never know, sometimes they find out to their surprise that they have fallen in love with a different aspect of theater. It can happen!)

It is a BA, but for MT, the ratio of core classes to major classes is just about 50/50 which is also just about the perfect fit for my D.

There is also a rumor that none other than UT is going to start an MT program…so keep an eye out - they always swore they would never do that (hassles with co-ordinating the departments is what I heard.)

I think that all the buzz about Texas State, which is just down the road from Austin, is making everyone else stand up and take notice, out here in the Lone Star State. I think that can end up being a good thing for us all.

Snapdragonfly, now I get it! After reading your post yesterday, I looked up St. Edwards, and there was nothing on it about MT, although the theatre program was extremely impressive and very well thought out! They look very well positioned to add on an MT specialization, and how fabulous that your daughter gets to be a part of it! Congratulations!

Now, let’s hope that CollegeMom can find some time soon to add all these new ones to the list!

The MT program is brand new so that might be why it’s not on the website yet, but it is in the catalog. That is sitting on the desk. With a lot of stuff about the program that we are pleased to discover.

We always did like the program a lot except that it didn’t have the MT and that was a pretty big deal for D. And they only JUST very recently announced the addition. It was a very pleasant surprise.

When it came down to the most basic and non negotiable of factors, this ended up being the only clear choice really, so I’m glad that a lot of the smaller details about the program are also in line with what we wanted. I didn’t figure we’d be lucky enough to get a school that hit one hundred percent on our litany of “wants” but St Ed’s is almost there. There were some other schools that we liked just as much but the one big non negotiable factor they did not satisfy was cost…so…Hilltoppers here we come! Woot !
(their mascot is a goat. Because the school is on the top of a hill. Ain’t it cute. They don’t have a football team…happily, this makes it even a better fit for my daughter as football holds no interest for her. I think the students there just adopt UT’s Longhorns if they care about football at all. lol.)

Santa Clara University in California has a BA in Theatre, with a Musical Theatre minor.
