Do Berkeley students get discounts from any other laptop companies other than Dell?

You can get the education discount from the Apple Education store...10%, I think. If you go in person to an Apple store and show your student ID (high school or college), I think they give you the discount there. If you prefer online, you can get there at education.apple.com
It's an especially good deal right now because if you buy a laptop from Apple, you get a $179 rebate towards any iPod. You can get a free Nano or get a 30GB/60GB Video for really cheap.

You don't. They don't come cheap. Possibly ebay or someone willing to sell you a used one. However, prices have come down dramatically in the last year. What I purchased last year can be purchased $400 now with duo core due to hardware price drops.

You buy them from resellers. This was a big leap of faith for me when I purchased my Asus laptop last summer. Buying a laptop I haven't seen in real life (only by online photos), and handing over nearly $2000 for a laptop to some small company on the East Coast. At the end it all worked out fine :)
