Big Red Tennis

How good is the team? I've looked at the record and the bios (that are listed) for all of their current players. But is it hard to try to become recruited for the team? etc.

Thanks a lot, everyone!

i think i'm gonna try out for the team, if it's possible. my high school career ended in devastating fashion

I noticed you posted this identical thread on multiple threads, so I guess you're just beginning your college research. I don't know about the tennis team this year, but I can give you an anecdotal story. I knew a young man who applied to Penn and Cornell with an interest in being recruited (about 9 years ago). He was ranked #1 in his home state and he was told by both coaches that they were only interested in players who had at least a regional ranking. He ended up at Cornell, because he got in on his academic merit. He didn't try out for the team as a walk-on. Things could be different today though.

by looking at the bios, some of those players are fairly impressive.

College tennis teams are usually filled by international students, from eastern europe usually. They work very very very hard over there and take their sport much more seriously than people in the US becuase for them its the only way out of poverty and such.

If you have a good regional ranking, & stats you can be recruited at Cornell & the other ivies. In other words, it's very hard!!

Ivies are not filled with starving Eastern Europeans, but quality is high. You do need to be regionally ranked; number one on your high school team alone won't cut it, just as it doesn't in any other sport.

Yeah, of course you need a good ranking. I was 1st singles on my HS team, and I'm about as good as the worse half of the Club Team. I didn't want to play varsity tennis, but I wouldn't have made it anyway if I had tried out I'm sure.

ESPN, i tried to get recruited for tennis, i was ranked 35 in the east and 321 nationally, and was not recruited. I ended up getting in on academic merit and i will try out for the team next fall. However, it is important to understand that walking on a collegiate division I tennis team is very difficult the teams carry around 12 or 13 players, normally only 7 of which get to play. I have spoken to the coach (barry schoonmaker) and he is a great guy and a great recruiter. It would be wise to contact him, however i must forewarn you that a sectional (not regional) ranking will definitely be necessary, and most likely a national ranking by playing in USTA sanctioned tournaments such as sectionals, national opens, and super nationals. Sections include the eastern section, midwest section, southern cal section...etc If you have the right credentials theres a chance you may be recruited if you don't its virtually impossible.

Thanks a lot, everyone.

what about for girls?
