Big Sib / Lil Sib Program

hey, did anyone else get a letter in the mail about this program? i'm guessing it's only for asians, as it was sent by the asian american new student orientation committee. anyways, who's thinking of joining? i'm considering it, but i'm afraid the whole thing might turn out to be a little segregationalist (if it allows only asian students to participate). opinions, anyone?

yea i got it with my asian mail today too. i'm thinkin' the same thing as you. I definitively wouldnt want to join anything that's exclusively asians. otherwise, it sounds like a pretty good idea.

there is one for african americans as well. im not doing it though. I hate the idea of only being paired with another african american. Im going to a diverse school so I want diverse experiences and outlooks. i dont want to belong to just that community

i love diversity too, but i am doing because it would be nice to have someone to show you around the first couple of days. its like another host situation from Admit weekend. Stany u should reconsider, because they're not going to handcuff you to Ujaama or anything. They just want to show you around campus.

but im going to be the lightest one there. i hate being the only white, black person in existence. i dont belong anywhere :(

stanmaster... what does "white, black person" mean?

ohh im haitian (which means im black and all haitians are usually very dark skinned) but i am very light in color so i look either white or spanish. i was jk in my previos post btw.

my sister is your complexion stany. try being white, african. LOL. in this day and age there is such a wide hue of complexions in the african american commuity. I stayed at Uj admit weekend, so i can tell u that its there at stanford as well. besides, Uj is about 40% nonblack, which i think added to the experience

well, i'm black -- in color, but my parents immigrated ( or is it emigrated?) here from panama in their 20s... alotta ppl are "mixed"... u just cant tell most the time

i just sent in my application today for the Sib program. I like it. It's like having a mentor, someone who's there to offer advices and guide you.

yeah, i sent in my app a while ago too. i figure i'm not gonna be spending every day with my sibs anyway, so who cares if the program is exclusively asian? i wanna go out and eat korean food with my sib family. :)

hah i put "i want to attend asian film fests and eat dim sum!!"

omg i love korean BBQ!!

Is there a deadline for the app? I am interested in the program, but I have been out of the country and have not had any access to mail.

deadline: august 27th

my DEADLINE says AUG 19...but then again I have the Latino form. i guess they're all different deadlines.
