Big state schools that give good financial aid to OOS students? (Merit or need-based.)

I don’t need a full tuition award… I was asking for answers specific to this question not my personal situation but thanks for the input

It’s hard to answer this Q without considering the details of a particular student…because those details matter…

These things are not a “one size fits all” situation…

For a student with a low EFC (like you), a school that gives good merit to an OOS student would not work if the award was “good” (say half tuition), and then you had a remaining cost of $30k to pay.

For a student with a very high EFC, a school that gives good merit (say half tuition) is a good deal because instead of having to pay $45k per year, the parents are happy that they “only” have to pay $30k per year.

The student with modest stats has virtually no hope of getting into a school that gives good need based aid, and wouldn’t get the merit at a school that gives “good merit.”

I answered in regards to your situation because I thought you might be considering a gap year and reapplying since it didn’t sound like your parents were going to pay for MSU. So, I thought you might be looking for other options, particularly since you included the desire that the school be big and rah rah.

You have indicated that your parents will pay $10k-20k per year. That would suggest that your award would need to cover tuition, so that the remaining costs (room, board, books, fees, travel and personal expenses, would be covered by your parents’ $10k-20k contribution.
