Big Ten expansion moves ahead

Notre Dame may decide to wait to find out if the Big East will do in hockey the same thing it did recently with lacrosse.

NU has been trying to get ND to play them for years after 1995 w/ no avail, that is, until today when both schools announced a home and home series in 2014 and 2018.

Along the same lines, NU tried to schedule Duke in BB and came close for the 2010-11 season but Duke ended up backing out.

Ohio State To Host Vandy In 2013

“Perhaps we should call it the Bowtie Bowl in honor of Ohio State-turned-Vanderbilt-turned-Ohio State president Gordon Gee. Or maybe we should simply salute new Vandy coach James Franklin for inking such a big-time game. Either way, Ohio State announced yesterday that Vanderbilt will be the Buckeyes season-opener in Columbus on August 31st, 2013.”…

Michigan adding men’s and women’s lacrosse teams

Associated Press

8:15 a.m. CDT, May 25, 2011
ANN ARBOR, Mich.—

The University of Michigan has decided to make a run at having big-time lacrosse teams.

The school announced Wednesday its men’s team will be an NCAA Division I program next season and the women will begin varsity competition the following year.

Michigan joins Ohio State and Penn State as the Big Ten’s only schools sponsoring men’s lacrosse and becomes the first Bowl Championship Series program to add men’s lacrosse since Notre Dame did it three decades ago.

Northwestern, Penn State and Ohio State have had women’s varsity programs.

The Wolverines have had a men’s club team since 1940. They have had a women’s club team for more than a decade.

The Michigan men’s club lacrosse team has had great success in intercollegiate competition at the non-varsity level, winning consecutive national championships in 2008, 2009, and 2010. Upgrading to varsity status will allow them to recruit scholarship athletes and compete at the varsity level in the NCAA.

I truly hope that it’s gonna be Urban Meyer. He is our Jim Harbaugh/Les Miles!! The interim coach Luke Fickell is fine but too young imho. I am fine with Chris Spielman, Mark Dantonio or even Bo Pelini…

:D

Perhaps Tressel can get a coaching job at Nebraska.

It’s hard to see Ohio State being able to get a big name coach with NCAA sanctions looming. They will probably need to take the same path USC did, hiring a guy that can keep some talent in the pipeline but will ultimately be easy to get rid of after 3 or 4 years.

Meyer could easily be a candidate in the future, if his health problems don’t get in the way.

Agree with ThisCouldBeHeavn. No question OSU is going to get hit with a 2-3 year ban on bowl appearances and possibly even conference championship game appearances, along with loss of scholarships and other heavy sanctions. The recruiting atmosphere is going to be difficult for the next few years. Even without his health problems, a coach like Urban Meyer doesn’t want to walk into that mess. I’d say it will take about 4-5 years for the smoke to start to clear before a big-name coach will want that job, and then it will be in a major rebuilding mode. Tressel has put OSU in a deep hole, but the reports now coming out indicate he’s run a dirty program all the way back to his days at Youngstown State, and it’s hard to believe OSU didn’t know that when it hired him. And if the AD and President didn’t know this stuff was going on, that’s pretty much a textbook case of “loss of institutional control,” one of the deadliest NCAA offenses. I always found Tressel’s sanctimonious choir-boy posture off-putting; turns out he was just a fraud and a hypocrite the whole time.

I think 2-3 years of bowl ban is too light for such long term voilations.

As TOSU alumnus, I am 100% for JT’s resignation. After all, he did lie to the NCAA’s initial investigation and that is a transgression in my dictionary. Contrary to popular belief, no one is larger than THE University itself, and we are certainly no SEC or U$C. ;-)

[Drew Sharp: NCAA won’t unleash its full wrath on Ohio State | Detroit Free Press | freep.com](http://www.freep.com/article/20110529/COL08/105290546/Drew-Sharp-NCAA-won-t-unleash-full-wrath-Ohio-State?odyssey=nav|head)

So, please stop comparing TOSU’s off-field violation with that of USC!!! (If anything, we didn’t give our players $ 1/4 million $ for luxury housing, and I sincerely doubt that TOSU is the ONLY institution where its players have sold their memorabilia in exchange for favor).

Personally, I understood why blue fans have been talking all the negatives about TOSU’s football program or making fun of ‘The Vest,’ but please keep it classy. If anything, I have not heard of any buckeye fan brought up the infamous $Fab Five$ or drunken Gary Moeller Incident which reminiscent of Woody’s firing (one punched the player, the other the police, which is worse?) in an attempt to make Michigan football program worse than what it has been in light of the recent TOSU football demise.

I’ve also received complaint regarding this thread at our school sub-forum yesterday from other CC member, but I am no Mod.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/ohio-state-university-columbus/1154962-tosu-must-replace-tressel-someone-higher-morals.html

In short, with most of our star players & recruits leaving the program and as you’ve all alluded that the school will certainly in need of a few years to recoup, Michigan should “finally” be left with no more excuses but win, come this Nov against our 37-year-old interim coach in THE GAME, no? ;-)

Sparkeye, Michigan’s basketball program was given harsh punishment (and rightly so) what it did. 15 years on, the program has still not recovered.

As for Moeller, what he did was classless, but he did not break any NCAA rules.

^^ Alex, That Woody vs Moeller discussion I brought up was in response to Michigan CCer’s thread on our school sub-forum in terms of moral and ethics - the Michigan’s deception of holier than thou attitude.

“Sparkeye, Michigan’s basketball program was given harsh punishment (and rightly so) what it did. 15 years on, the program has still not recovered.”

Honestly, “15-years” is long enough for an elite program to recover imho. As a Spartan, I tend to believe that Tom Izzo has been doing an excellent job at MSU the last two decades or so which translated into mediocre Michigan Bball program due to its inability to compete for the best in-state players rather than the residual impact of NCAA sanctions.

At any rate, I know that if and when TOSU lost to Michigan this Nov, I won’t be making excuses, period. Go Bucks!! lol

Sparkeye:

Please explain to me USC give $250,000 to its athletes.

"NCAA smacks down USC after finding Reggie Bush took money, gifts … rent free in a $770,000 house in San Diego, and receiving airline tickets,…

…The NCAA also determined that Bush received cash, clothing, plane tickets and vehicles during the last two years he played at the school, from 2003 to 2005."

*I’ve updated my alternative source, since last link required sign-in for access. I am sure Todd McNair has the detail…

“Sparkeye, Michigan’s basketball program was given harsh punishment (and rightly so) what it did. 15 years on, the program has still not recovered.”

Not only that, but The University of Michigan forfeited EVERY single game those cheaters played in. I’d like to see tOSU do the same, but I know that will NEVER happen.

^^ That I do not know, since none of us work for the NCAA infraction committee. But even with all the winning record against Michigan been erased, there is no doubt in my mind that Wolverines just weren’t as good as the Buckeyes on the field throughout most of the last decade.

Moreover, from the top of my head, I can recall that at least 3 times that JT had his buckeyes took a knee inside of Michigan’s 10-yard line in his 9-1 record against the team from up north!! The truth of the matter is that like it or not, ‘The Vest’ does not run up the score in THE GAME. It’s a century-old rivalry game, and he respects the tradition. You’ve got to give some credit to the man imho.
