Big Ten expansion moves ahead

“Neither my daughters nor any of their Midwestern friends or classmates think that.”

See above.

“As I said before, you’re just making it up. And as a Midwesterner, and the father of Midwesterners, and the brother and cousin and uncle of Midwesterners, I find it derogatory and insulting.”

You need to get out more.

I spent a semester as a grad student at Indiana U. Having lived in Michigan, Illinois, and Mass., I thought there were 3 prominent universities in the sate of Indiana. But here are 2 words I never heard at IU: “Notre” and “Dame.” It simply wasn’t on anybody’s radar.

And you’re dreaming if you think people in Michigan are widely aware of the joys of Kalamazoo college.

And even on prestige-mad CC, you’ll find plenty of people saying LOTS folks in NC, TN, and LA scoff at Duke/WF, Vandy, and Tulane, and prefer the local flagship. Those places would barely be recognizable without the folks from NY/NJ and their cash.

And in all these cases it’s merely coincidental that the preferred in-state flagship is huge?

Really, I didn’t know that. Mind giving us some examples?

^^

No real examples needed to support the statement as originally written:

Fwiw, without the political support granted to the “different and better” test created by the geniuses of Iowa City and the ensuing college application gamesmanship, the statement might still be true. Without the mandatory component, the ACT would have garnered the success it deserves, and that it nothing compared to what it is today … and should have been.

So we are talking about many, many years ago? Sure, when I applied for college, there was no ACT or at least I didn’t know about it.

IMO, the ACT is a much better college standardized test than the SAT.

I still took the SAT in addition to the ACT though since it’s much more universal.

Back in the 1970s, I bounced among high schools and colleges in the Northeast and Midwest. The ACT was unheard of in Massachusetts, and I think it was the same in the entire Northeast.

GoBlue, I just checked a 1977-78 Boston College catalog I have. It goes into detail about the SAT requirements, and doesn’t mention the ACT at all. I’m pretty sure that was a common practice years ago in that neck of the woods.

My clueless boss is an Aggie.

Guys, take the ACT discussion outside.

Schmaltz, since I was considering university admissions (way back in 1990), all universities of note on the East Coast accepted the ACT with the only notable exception being Princeton. All other top East Coast university or LAC accepted the ACT. Even Princeton would make exceptions for students who lived in areas that only offered the ACT.

I think you have to go back to the 70s and early 80s to see a time when more East Coast colleges and universities refused the ACT.

^^

I believe that Wake Forest should be considered a school of some reknown, and I further believe it did not care for the ACT. Well, one could always exclude part of the East Coast to make a point!

The poor cousin has come a long way, but will never shed its reputation.

So will Texas (Leader) and Notre Dame (Legend) head to the B1G?
No link here, just a rumor I’ve heard. :)

“In order to fulfill our mission of being the best college discussion forum, we want important topics to be discussed here at College Confidential.”

Let’s discuss this issue here.

Perhaps we should wait for an announcement or a rumor about Texas looking at a truly important or relevant conference. At least the A$$ies were looking into the right direction. ;)

For all we know, there will be plenty more war scraps for the B1G vultures to feast on before reaching the optimum members of Leaders and Legends.

If I was in charge of the Big 10, I’d try to grab Oklahoma and their amazing football tradition, and tell Texas to have fun flying their gigantic ego up to Pullman and Corvallis.

If you take Oklahoma, do you have to take Oklahoma State too?

^

It looks that way and I remember reading they were tied at the hip with the conference expansion talks. OK Legislature and T.Boone Pickens won’t let OU go without taking Okie State. Which is why I think OU to the Big Ten never really gets any legs, the Big Ten doesn’t want to take OU’s little brother. The Pac-12 appears willing though, so I have a feeling they are headed there. Big 12’s days are numbered.
