They are the plum targets, no doubt. Rich history and new, large and growing media markets for a conference. I agree the foursome creates political baggage that only some may be willing to accept. OU/OSU and UT/Tech fit in the Pac-12’s historic travel partner arrangement.

xiggi, as a Horn fan do you have a preference?
a. Keep Big XII together and possibly expand
b. Pac-12
c. SEC
d. B1G
e. Independent
f. ACC

Personally, I’m fine with Pac-12 as is.

Why do you think that is? Too many egos?

“3. A caveat to the above: if ND and Rutgers went B1G, it might open up New York City. As I’ve long suspected, Rutgers has the most fans in NYC, with a 20,9% market share. ND is second with 9.2%. But then you add Penn State (#3, 6.4%), Michigan (#5, 5.0%), and Ohio State (#9, 2.2%) and suddenly you’ve got 43.7% of the NYC college football-viewing market. Yes, NYC is and always will be more NFL-oriented, but it’s just such a big market that it represents a lot of money if BTN can get on expended basic there (which I believe it’s not now, but someone can correct me if I’m wrong). Adding Rutgers and ND would make B1G by far the dominant college football conference in the NYC market. And my guess is Penn State-Rutgers and ND-Rutgers annual rivalry games could boost interest in B1G football in the nation’s biggest market well beyond current levels.”

Disagree. Notre Dame and Penn State are the dominant teams in a Pro-town (for whatever that really matters). Penn State alums are watching the games, without question win or lose. That’s why Penn State is often on network or ESPN in the tri-state market. Rutgers alums are not watching Rutgers football in any number that matter. First, the games are not on network TV, so what is there to watch other then the times they are on cable? Secondly, football is not a big deal at Rutgers, never has been (although they gave it a couple good tries). It’s like saying that there are a lot of Duke fans in some area, therefore a ready audience for Duke football. So, Rutgers opening up the New York market? That’s a joke.

Most of this ND discussion is moot. They have made it clear that they want to remain independent and that they would go to the ACC if they were forced.

Penn State may be talking to the ACC, but I doubt they make the jump.

Uconn is a better fit with the ACC due to basketball.

Rutgers is a wild card.

UCB, your list is probably in the order of preference I would have. I was happy when the Big XII avoided implosion last year and chagrined when the envious Aggies created the current malaise. Fwiw, I believe that there is a lot less acrimony between OU and Texas that the people who make a living chasing stories (or creating them) would like everyone to believe. OU, OSU and Texas and perhaps TexasTech are tied to the hip and benefit from being in one conference. I do think that OU is less enamored with the Aggies and the northern neighbors.

All in all, I would prefer an expanded Big XII but believe that too much bad blood has spilled to make this is a reality. The second best alternative is the PAC16 version. Rejoining schools such as Nebraska would be the last option in my book, short of the pleasure of seeing Nebraska mightily annoyed again. :)

PS That article you quoted deserves a BS of the week award. It is pure drivel as most of the sourceless stories.

@informative,

Interesting enough no one thus far has accused ACC of poaching the BIG EAST in a stealth mode. The deal was struck when the BIG EAST Commissioner was completely unaware of, chilling in Rutger’s press box watching the football game…
In fact, ACC would have terminated the BIG EAST, had Rutgers and UConn not had second thoughts! You know, it’s always easy to pick on the rich and powerful (i.e. New York Yankees or B1G), but not always right imho!

^^ Something called 'Facts" based on TV revenues $. Hey I am far from perfect, but at least I am not a sour grape or being hypocritical based on DSM-IV (do you know what that is? It’s better than a dictionary link imho)… Perhaps you should re-examine Nate Silver article that I’ve posted earlier. ;-)

<a href=“The Geography of College Football Fans (and Realignment Chaos) - The New York Times”>The Geography of College Football Fans (and Realignment Chaos) - The New York Times;

Call me hypocritical or full of sour grapes all you want, especially if it boosts your ego even more. As I wrote earlier, we are all fans and we like to tease one another and push a few buttons. However, I believe that there ought to be a limit to one’s fanfaronnade. The bragging about everything Big 10 has long passed the limit of decency.

I could understand it a bit better if your delusion about the grandeur of your conference was beyond your own control, but that would be too much.

^^ It does not satisfy me calling you anything other than Xiggi. Likewise, I expect you to address me as ‘Sparkeye7,’ deal? (I am really too old to be called a dude or sparky nowadays…@_@") If you take a good look, most of my responses to you were passive pending on your posts. Nonetheless, my sincerely apologies to everyone if my B1G fan-hood has gone overboard from time to time. Please excuse someone (me) who had literally gone through a handful of these institutions in terms of education.

“The bragging about everything Big 10 has long passed the limit of decency.”

Once again, I appreciate your comment!! Thanks for the reminder!!
Please now refocus and continue to contribute on the realignment issues.

“I could understand it a bit better if your delusion about the grandeur of your conference was beyond your own control, but that would be too much.”

Perhaps I am delusional as you alluded, but I try to prove all my points with facts. As truth shall set us free! Respect! :)

OK, it’s gone too far now. It’s time to exile Beebe and Larry Scott of the Pac 10 to a deserted island where they can do no further harm.

Also, this spectacle may be getting the attention of a notoriously nosy Congress, given the antitrust and not-for-profit issues regarding U.S. colleges. Remember when the Virginia state legislature stuck its nose into the last round of ACC expansion? And I noticed that Gov. Rick Perry, a Texas A&M cheerleader back in the day, chose his words very carefully when discussing the SEC option several days ago.

By the way, did anyone else hear Mike Francesca of radio WFAN New York rip into Rutgers’ fans for suggesting that Rutgers would bring the NYC market to the Big 10? You could hear the sheer digust in his voice. Sheesh!

Sparkeye, I agree about the ACC…poaching members while the Big East was just mourning the passing of its founder. The nerve!

LakeWashington, it is in Larry Scott we trust. If Beebe was as competent as Scott we wouldn’t be having this discussion.

Rutgers boards are having a massive meltdown as they may now be stuck with the “new” BIG EAST… =.="

^ Sensible decision by the Pac-12. No way would Texas give up the money potential in its Longhorn Network deal. No way do the financials of expansion make sense for the Pac-12 without those lucrative Texas TV markets—with or without Texas as a conference member.

The semster just started but I need to transfer so that I can complete my AA, is there any chance I could still get into school now?

Haha! According to the Pac-12 statement, seems like the problem was with the Longhorn Network. OU **** blocked by its rival. Poor Sooners!

^^ No kidding, UCB!!!
