Big Ten expansion moves ahead

Headline in Academe Today for 7.19.2012:

The article is password protected so I’ll not post any of it, but it relates to the possibility under the conference rules of a member having to show cause why it should not be expelled or suspended if it retains employees who provide intentionally false or inaccurate information during an investigation.

[Jim Delany Wants the Power to Fire Coaches - Players - The Chronicle of Higher Education](http://chronicle.com/blogs/players/jim-delany-wants-the-power-to-fire-coaches/30771)

Detroit Free Press has an unscientific on-line survey today on the maximum punishment that should be meted out to Penn State. As of this writing, 30% say “death penalty,” 6% say bowl ban, 5% say TV ban, 7% say scholarship losses, 9% say kicked out of Big Ten, and 30% say “all of the above.” Only 13% say they’ve been punished enough. Add death penalty to “all of the above” and that’s 60% calling for the death penalty. Add kicked out of the Big Ten to “all of the above” and that’s 39% calling for them to be expelled from the conference.

[Report: Big Ten could kick out Penn State | Other Colleges | Detroit Free Press | freep.com](http://www.freep.com/article/20120719/SPORTS08/120719018/penn-state-big-ten-joe-paterno-jerry-sandusky-sex)

Yup. All it takes is 8 votes to revoke Nitties, 2/3 of conference members. But, I doubt it will happen. Unless… that ‘Second Mile’ Pedo Ring rumor is confirmed, in which case the general public will be calling for the end of its football program and demolishing all related facilities on campus - including Beaver Stadium.

Not a bad idea on the surface, but the questions ought to be … in what proportion? Would 100 percent of the revenues be directed to the charities? Would allowable expenses include the lavish perks to insiders? How much a LOSS would PSU have to absorb? The football program at PSU has to COST the university or be a complete loss. Not a “let me keep most of it or a bit of it.”

The point here is that the punishment has to be punitive; simply allocating a small portion of the revenues and move on with a similar program is not enough. While it might be scapegoating PSU, it is time to send a clear message that the football powers have to clean house or face a future without fielding a football team.

If it takes a complete beheading of a storied program, so much the better! Nobody cares if the University of Eastern Wyoming loses its football program. Showing that Joe Paterno was not God after all and that his program was a poster child for all that is wrong is collegiate football would be a good start. And please do not quote the “all he did good for the school” as a rebuttal to all that is wrong. He gave back a portion of what he RECEIVED, and negotiated deals that provided VERY WELL for his family and friends until the bitter end. And those deals were reason enough for him to protect his friends and keep a close lid on this entire sordid affair. No, not by himself, but the tacit (or direct) approval from his supposed “supervisors” and “bosses.” If one believes Paterno had a boss; He surely did not seem to think there was one, except for the one he met recently.

rjk,

The article reads like face-saving with a little grandstanding thrown in for good measure. I can think of a couple of reasons it would never happen. First, what college president or AD in their right mind would cede any control over the firing of staff? Here in Ann Arbor, former Dominos CEO Dave Brandon is the new AD for Michigan sports. He is slapping advertising and raising or introducing fees on anything and everything to do with Michigan sports. Can you ever envision someone like Brandon not fighting this tooth and nail? ADs and presidents will never give up control without detailed, arduous processes in place (on that front you might be right - they’re good at making simple things complex).

The second reason there’d be no concession is that having a commissioner with firing power would finally institutionalize the idea that big time college football is nothing more than minor league ball for the NFL. If Delany is Goodell then how are the B1G teams any different than NFL franchises? Delany may be powerful and he may be persuasive but convincing the school presidents which new team to accept is a very different process than convincing them to throw a school out or have them give up their ‘sovereignty’.

UCB,

While I agree that PSU should be establishing and financially supporting child-abuse awareness programs (they should be doing that regardless) that’s certainly not how the NCAA works. The NCAA blithely punishes schools and shortens the careers of athletes who get caught taking $500 payoffs from boosters; this sort of event certainly goes beyond that. Worse still, for every fan who boos and jeers PSU, there’ll be another who’ll walk past JoePa’s statue and say, “Hey he wasn’t that bad a guy. One mistake. Look at all the good he did”.

I haven’t screamed that PSU should be wiped from the face of the earth or that football should be eliminated forever. I have advocated that they pay a price and then move on. I have a hard time with the argument that the football team deserves a pass because of the innocents left behind. It feels perilously close to a child murdering his parents then asking the court for leniency because he’s an orphan.

I would argue with civil penalties forthcoming that will be penalty for the school. Penalty for the people involved is termination, jail and reputations ruined. Penalty for the football program could involve a reduction in scholarships, a bowl ban and 100% donation of revenues to child abuse organizations.

ESPN ran documentary on SMU death penalty. They are leery of implementing it again due to how long SMUs program suffered. Right or wrong that is the case. And those were for direct NCAA violations, not criminal penalties which are being handled via the criminal court system.

“He is slapping advertising and raising or introducing fees on anything and everything to do with Michigan sports.”

There will not be any advertising inside the bowl area of Michigan Stadium. The alumni will not stand for it, and Brandon won’t either.

One could make a case that the final scope of the penalty imposed on SMU was influenced by the attempts to cover up the actions of Sherwood. Important people, including Bill Clements did not come out smelling like roses.

The depth and length of the coverup at PSU is just as bad as the direct actions of a sick individual. The fact that the abuse did happen is only part of the equation. The fact that people made sure the proverbial ***** did not hit the fan years ago is what is most disturbing.

I believe that by the time the “authorities” --be federal or NCAA’s-- will be done with this case, the reason for never seen before sanctions will be apparent to all.

It’ll be interesting to see how it all plays out. One thing is certain, there is a lot more embarrassment, anguish and penalties for PSU after leadership covered up the problem vs. confronting it correctly back in 1998 (calling the police and firing Sandusky).

When sentencing a criminal, the judge should NOT have to be concerned with the family, friends, or businesses he will have to leave. The injustice perhaps is that those who have benefitted from the lack of action by the school have continued to do so for such a long period of time.

This case was all about protecting the have-a-lot and the people who derived direct and indirect benefits from this corrupt program. That the course is reversed by the disappearance of King Football is nothing else than poetic justice.

The town should have had its priorities straightened years ago.

If the State College economy is that based on 7 home football games it has larger problems. It will hurt some but I doubt many will go out of business from a two year loss of football games. They can use the time to focus on basketball.

Welcome to the Era of Super Conferences!! Go B1G!!! LOL~

Perhaps UVA, but Carolina is the is the real gem.

Personally I would love to see the ACC fall apart, simply to stick it to Notre Dame.

This crap again?!

Something WILL happen over the near term. Maybe UVa/UNC–maybe not. They are the most obvious targets and know how to count $$$.
