Big Ten expansion is over for the foreseeable future.

The conference’s Council of Presidents/Chancellors had its winter meetings today in suburban Chicago and announced the expansion pursuit that began a year ago and resulted in the addition of Nebraska “has reached its natural conclusion.”

The league said it was appropriate to focus on integrated Nebraska into the league and not pursue further expansion. The Cornhuskers will begin competing in the Big Ten starting with the 2011-12 school year.

The Big Ten said it will continue to monitor the college landscape but won’t be “actively engaged in conference expansion for the foreseeable future and does not expect to be proactively seeking new members.”

The Big Ten’s announcement last December that it would pursue expansion began a process that at times seemed destined to trigger massive changes in conference alignment.

In the end, it resulted in modest-to-moderate changes. In addition to Nebraska joining the Big Ten, fellow Big 12 member Colorado joined the Pac-10. Utah also joined the Pac-10 by leaving the Mountain West Conference.

Among other changes, Boise State left the Western Athletic Conference for the Mountain West, and Brigham Young left the Mountain West to become an independent in football and join the West Coast Conference in other sports.

Just last week, Texas Christian announced it would join the Big East, some of whose members were speculated last spring as being targets of the Big Ten.
