What did you learn about what to bring and what not to bring as a freshman? And even more specifically, as a freshman in a Dykstra triple? I am thinking about stuff like: comforter-- really light weight because it is so hot, right? What was your bedding of choice? Will I ever need a suit/sport coat/dress up outfit? Printer? Fan, I imagine. What did you learn?

Comforter: depends on your sleeping habits. The temperatures can vary quite a bit (it isn’t necessarily always hot).

For my bedding, I just brought a basic blanket and a comforter. That sufficed for me.

You’ll need a suit/dress up outfit if you plan on attending events which require a suit/dress up outfit.

As for the fan, remember you won’t have too much room and your roommates might not want a large fan taking up space. I’d recommend a small desk fan instead of a huge room fan.

Also, keep clothes that need to be hung up on the hanger for when you move in. That makes it a lot easier to get set up.

Fan: Coordinate with your roomates when you find out who they are. I think a small fan that you can tie to the wall is good enough.

Printer: A lot of people bring their own printers. If I could go back, I would save the money and not buy one. The residential computer labs charge 5 cents per page (could be duplex) so that is slightly cheaper than the printing costs of a laser printer. I did all my printing there or on campus. Usually I print notes, slides, etc. Printing outside is great since I don’t need to worry about changing toner/ink, buying paper, or hardware failures. But it all depends on your habits. If you often find yourself needing to print out a paper due tomorrow morning after 1am, when the latest computer lab closes, then having your own printer may be useful.

Suit: I assume you don’t live near UCLA. Bringing a suit is a great idea, there should be at least one event in the year when it may be useful. One event may be an interview.

overpacking. brought stuff for certain occasions “o this might happen so i’ll need this”, turns out most of the stuff i didn’t use at all (i noticed when i was packing up to move out)
plus you can get a lot of free stuff that can be used for certain occasions or you can buy it for cheap some place in westwood

Don’t bring high school notes, unless it’s like a cheatsheet or summary notes. (I still use my calculus cheat sheet). While I did use some of my notes, the majority of the time, I didn’t. It always seems that the book for the class suffices or I ask the professor/TA. (Nearly all of my notes were too vague or shallow to be of use.)

Also, don’t buy anything you THINK you need. Only buy what you KNOW you need. (I have so much junk stuff that I bought. What a waste of money.)

I’ll also mention overpacking since it was a big deal for me too. A lot of the school supply stuff can be bought at the campus store. The prices might be a little higher but IMO it is worth it not having to lug it back and forth between home and UCLA.

Don’t bring high school books because you will have access to all possible hs textbooks from the UCLA libraries.

Don’t bring clothes that you don’t fit in now thinking you’ll hit Wooden and suddenly be fit enough to wear them later. The freshmen 5-15 will make the clothes seem like bad memories of a past healthier and fitter you.

If you have a mini fridge, bring it…you don’t want to rent an overpriced unit from school (300 dollars maybe???). If you don’t have one, don’t try to buy one because honestly, you’ll eat out and eat at the dining halls and also will party/drink elsewhere. You do not need a fridge; people just want one.

Do not bring a desktop…you will regret the space it takes up.

Please bring detergent…the dorms don’t provide such things for you.

Do bring shower slippers; foot fungus is a danger.

thanks ! Approx how much closet space is there? Also, can I bring a rolling plastic set of drawers? They are maybe 3 feet high… Target sells them at a very reasonable price. :)
