bike at UCSD?

I am an incoming freshman at Warren College and I was wondering if I need to bring a bike there. Is bicycle a necessity for getting to classes since the campus is so big? Thanks.

It’s not a necessity. Most people don’t bike but you certainly can if you want to.

yeah, after a while you kinda get used to all the walking. biking is convenient, if you’re willing to put up with the hills. going down is fun, sure, but uphill is ridiculous…

Definitely not necessary. I never got a bike because of the hills, and the only time when you would need one is if you have back-to-back classes all the way across campus (i.e. you need to get from warren to revelle in 10 minutes).

I have friends who are going to be soph’s at UCB and they were saying that people will steal anything they can from your bike if it’s not locked. I love biking and am definitely gonna bike around campus some days. Are bikes stolen at such a crazy rate at UCSD?

Haha yeah, my friends at UCB said people literally disassemble parts of their bikes and take them to class with them to make sure the parts don’t get stolen. I don’t think bike theft is a big problem at UCSD. That said, you should definitely have a lock.

Try Kryptonite locks, they work and you can get them anywhere-Walmart and bike stores. Biking at UCSD, as mentioned before, is really not done; because of the stairs and the hills. The buses/cars that travel in the main areas are busy. It’s not like Davis where it’s flat and there are no “inner” roads on campus, that’s why everyone bikes there. UCSD is different. Look at Price Center-stairs everywhere.
