Bike in Dorms?

I have a road bike that I want to bring with me if I end up attending Davis (and possibly join the cycling team), but I don’t want to bring it if I’d have to leave it outside as that would be a good place for it to get stolen. Would it be possible to keep in the dorms or is there some secure bike storage area? Thanks!

Are you a freshman or a transfer?

If you’re a freshman, Segundo and Tercero might be a bit small to put your bike, but if you live in Cuarto, you can always leave your bike in the common room of your suite (all dorms in Cuarto are suite-style). Also, Thoreau Hall in Cuarto has gated and fenced bike parking.

If you’re a transfer student, you’ll be living in Primero Grove, which have apartment-styled dorms, so it’d be easy for you to store your bike inside.

There will not be enough room to store your bike in Tercero or Segundo. Cuarto would definitely be large enough, though.

If you learn to secure your bike properly, you can lock it up outside. Just make sure you have a kriptonite chain (or one of equal strength) and a way to lock both tires, and never lock your bike to itself.

i was in segundo north (thompson) freshman year and my roommate was on the cycling team. he would just take the wheel(s) off and store the frame under his bed. i would not suggest locking it outside.

Thanks for the replies guys! Yeah, I’ll be a freshman student next year. That sounds like a good idea btw Hella, maybe that’ll do if I end up dorming at segundo or tercero

Segundo dorms are TINY! If you put your bike on your side of the room, honestly, good luck having space to move around without bumping into it. Plus, your roommate will hate you, especially if you’re on the side closest to the door. :P

Just from what I’ve noticed. I have siblings who go to Davis…with roomies that used to bring up their bikes.

Listen to Hella. Even with a kryptonite lock and chain, you’re still a huge target to be stolen. Thieves use power tools to cut off your chain. Or better yet, if you have crazy locks, they cut the bike rack you locked it to.

Dunno if it’s possible, but if you join the cycling team, maybe you can store your “nice” bike somewhere safe, and ride a cheaper bike around class/leave parked at dorm.

@kagemucha that’s what I was thinking of - bringing another old/cheap bike to ride around campus and just have the nicer one stored somewhere. Is there any place that would be possible to do, some sort of relatively cheap/secure paid storage around the campus maybe? Or would living in a suite basically be the best option?

A suite would be your best option, IMO. TAPS does bike storage, but they only do that for the summer.
