I’m bringing my cruiser next year and I don’t want to get it stolen! What kind of lock do i need/ what brand? Any advise about how to lock it up or bike security in general?

my suggestion is to go buy a crappy 10-20$ bike at a garage sale instead of bring an expensive bike so that way if its stolen, u wouldnt feel too sad

buy a lock with thick metal threads (.75inch-1inch), i have cut marks on mine from someone trying to use a saw to saw thru it but they couldn't jack it, hahaha!

wouldn't those huge U locks be best?

The u-locks are better than cable locks. But you might also want to get multiple locks... one to lock the front tire to the frame, & another to lock the bike to a permanant structure (to prevent the thief from picking up the bike & walking off). Also, remember to take any removable not-locked parts to class.. such as your seat or bike light.

definately remove your bike light, i've never removed my bike seat and it's never been jacked. I also only use the cable lock to lock the bike to a post or the wheel to the frame, and it has never been stolen. Even if your bike does get jacked somehow you can buy a used bike for reall cheap

No one steals bikes if they are locked. Just make sure you buy a lock that can attach to the frame and both wheels and you're good to go.

Also, keep in mind that leaving your bike outside during big breaks is a bad idea, because even though your bike won't get stolen with a lock there is a good chance you'll lose your seat..

Then wheres the safest place to leave your bike??

In your room.

well, isn't it a bit inconvenient to move your bike in and out of your room EVERYDAY?

he said the safest place. not the most convenient.

Actually that's false - it just decreases the chances. A friend of mine had his locked bike stolen one night. (He had one of those inch thick cable locks). About two weeks later, the locked bike was returned to the same place it was stolen from, still locked. Noticeable cut marks on the cable & pick marks around the key hole.

Another friend of mine had his locked bike stolen also. He found it about a month later outside one of the dorms (he didn't live there). His lock was still attached, but someone else had put another lock on to attach it to a bike rack. I think he called the cops to get that bike lock cut so he got his bike back.

Well, I meant leave it in your room during the big breaks, not daily.

Pearl, regardless, I dont think it is very common to have your bike lock broken unless you have an extravagant bike, you leave it all alone by itself, or you leave it outside during a break. Im sure no one would have stolen one of your friends bikes if it didnt satisfy one of those categories.

I know a couple people that I met during freshmen year that use to steal bikes and I'm pretty sure they never went after bikes that were locked. I'm not saying thats the case for all thieves, but all you can do is lock your bike and pray, anyway, right?

Are they still using the bike cops/parking services to cut locks and confiscate bikes parked on campus that aren't registered? They used to do this a LOT when I was an undergrad (but they also seemed to use a lot more bike cops way back when). Maybe it was easier then since the heavy duty locks were non-existant. In a corollary, for those of you bringing bikes, don't forget to register your bike since it makes it a lot easier to track you down when they find bikes.

Bike stolen while locked. We bought a cheaper replacement. Another parent told me his kid had 2 bikes and 2 cell phones stolen during last year.

Maybe that kid was just irresponsible and lost his phones/didnt lock his bikes properly?

Perhaps so.

What is wrong with these kids?? I am extremely poor and would never think about stealing from people like that.
