Bike?

Would it be a good idea to bring a bike? It seems like having one would be helpful but I'm just unsure of where I could store it... I remember seeing plenty of bike racks outside but is there any place to store bikes inside so they won't get damaged or anything (especially any places near IV)?
Thanks!

I know several people who kept their bikes inside their dorm rooms.

Remember that, legally, you can’t ride bicycles on sidewalks- you have to ride on bike paths, or (far more frequently) in the road itself. On top of that, bikes aren’t particularly useful, unless there is somewhere very specific you need to be and you only have a very limited amount of time to get there. You can walk from one end of campus to the other in ten minutes easily, so chances are you won’t need a bike to get to classes, and public transit will generally be able to get you anywhere else in a reasonable amount of time. So if you’re planning on a very tight schedule beyond your academic schedule (a job somewhere off campus, or volunteer work that begins soon after a class ends) you may get good use out of a bike. However, a well managed schedule will eliminate any need for one.

Nahs, I seldom saw people riding bikes.
And most of the time, Boston will be a snowy mess. Not a good time to ride bikes.
A lot of people longboard, if you’re into that

okay thanks for the input!

Tons of people bike. But I wouldn’t say that a lot of freshmen do. Usually once you’re on co-op and/or living off campus. I’m kinda regretting not getting a bike this summer-- biking opens up Boston in a whole new way. Not relying on the T is crazy haha

I’ll be in the CEP community service program thing so I was thinking a bike might be helpful for transportation in that regard, plus i enjoy biking, I’m just worried it would be too much of an annoyance to keep it in my dorm room… I haven’t seen the inside of an IV room but I wouldn’t think they would be big enough to comfortably accommodate a bike, but does anyone have any experience with that?
thanks so much for all your help!

IV dorm rooms aren’t terribly small, but they are set up such that some space can be hard to utilize. In singles (in doubles, there is probably a bit more room in this area, but the layout is the same) every two rooms share a bathroom in between. The bathroom is on the hallway side, which means that about from the door, to halfway between your door and your window their is an awkward space that you generally won’t use- you aren’t aloud to bring furniture, and none of the furniture that comes with the room really fits in the space. You should have room for a bike.

Try “allowed”

Okay thanks! I’m having trouble visualizing the room layout or whatever, but I’ll just bring it and see if it works out : )

Just something you may want to consider-- if you want a bike for transportation to/from community service engagements, you might be volunteering in Roxbury, Dorchester, etc. Your first semester in Boston you may not be comfortable biking to the sketchier parts of town (taking the bus to those areas can also feel kinda sketchy the first few times-- I learned to love it haha). I’m not trying to scare you-- just want to make sure you’ve thought about the possibility.

Okay, thanks blinkangel, good to know : )

There is space to put a bike in an IV single, if that’s what you’re in. There’s the awkward narrow part right where you come in the door. The guy 2 doors down from me last year always had his bike stored there.

Are you bringing a good, newish bike or a junker? Be careful of making it a target…

Also, NUPD constantly drills it into your head to get a U-lock, not just a cable lock. And don’t just lock the wheel… I’ve seen some pretty interesting bike remains around campus.
