Are road bikes ok? I can buy an old one for pretty cheap around here off CL, but was wondering if that was generally accepted around campus, or inconvenient or anything. Any cons to having a road bike?

Hmm road bikes are racing bikes no? Personally I have a mountain bike but I do know a few people with racing bikes and a lot more with 'hybrids'. I mean Stanford does have a few ups and downs but it is mostly flat so I don't really think that having a racing bike would be have major problems...

There are plenty of racing bikes around campus. Everywhere you could logically need to go will be paved, so you shouldn't run into any trouble.

I don't think it matters what kind of bike you have. I've seen basic bikes from Walmart, mountain bikes, good quality bikes, beach cruisers, and unicycles (seriously). I just recommend that you don't spend too much just in case it gets stolen =/ (rare, but it happens).

No I'm getting a cheap one off CL. Just wanted a roadie cuz they're fun to ride =D

related bike topic: the bike shop recommended adding fenders to avoid mud splatters- is it worth it?

Well.... mud splatters/water splatter is a bit of an annoyance when it rains; your butt gets wet, and your backpack or back will get somewhat wet/dirty. I don't know how much the fenders cost, but I would definitely consider getting them.

thanks- I've just been kinda paranoid about anything that any store is calling a "must have" for college... I mean, who needs a rack that can hold 20 baseball caps?

I would suggest getting them. Why? Because I don't have them and my bike's driving me insane. I think I'm going to get them put this year I kept meaning to last year but I just never got to it. Imagines a likely scene: you're late to class, its raining and you go breakneck speed on your bike hoping to get to class (this is especially important for PWR and IHUM sections because many take attendance). You finally get there run to your class and sit down only to find your pants are soaking wet. No not fun.

So yeah if I were you I'd get them. If your bike seat is of the spongy type I'd also get a waterproof cover you can use when it rains (a plastic bag works just as well but if doesn't exactly look amazing.
