Hi, I’ve brought this up once before, but for some reason the whole bike thing really turns me off to davis. That said, it is pretty much the only thing so I’m trying to figure out how I can get over this…ridiculous…concern. Are those bike circles really as frightening as they look? And, while I’m at it, i’ve got to ask…does anyone actually wear a helmet? Are bike crashes even a problem?

Also, how’s the weather? More specifically, how is it to someone from socal? Just curious :)

I don't bike at all in Davis, but from what I've seen although bike circles look intimidating theyre not a problem at all. No one wears helmets here.

Thanks, that was actually exactely what I was hoping for, especially the, "I dont bike at all in Davis." Can't say I'm looking forward to the new weather but Davis is starting to sound more like the right place for me. Anyway, thanks again.

if you ride a bike off campus... where cars are everywhere... where a helmet. On campus where there are no cars, the speeds at which you crash are enough to get you a little scratched up but nothing major so most people don't wear a helmet.

The only time when I find the bike circles scary is that first week of fall... when all the freshmen come in swarms & don't know which way to go or how to let people in & out of the bike circle without crashing into them. I walk for that first week. But once people know what they are doing, the bike circles are fine. I've only been in one bike crash involving another person and it's my fifth year at davis- it was in a bike circle. I was entering the bike circle and this guy came quickly around and it looked like he was going to continue around the circle, but at the last minute he decided he wanted out of the circle & he cut in front of me and I slammed into his rear tire & fell down & scraped my knee.

If you don't want to bike, you don't have to. You can get around on foot just fine.
Winters are cold (like highs in the low 40's) and the winters are hot (over 100), fall & spring are short seasons but nice when they last.

When I visited the campus, I didn't see one person* with a helmet on. Now this doesn't mean you can't wear one, but I am just pointing out the fact that maybe it's not as dangerous as it seems; therefore, the students don't feel like helmets are a must-have. However, many do think that helmets are 'lame' <okay, so="" maybe="" not="" that="" specific="" word="">, so they choose not to wear them.</okay,>

*I am specifically referring to the students <or the="" ones="" with="" backpacks="" at="" least="">. I did however see other Davis residents on the streets with helmets on. Note that I have just visited the campus twice, so maybe a current student could give you an accurate detailed account. </or>

Also, the weather is not THAT bad. However, do take into account that I have been living in Northern California my whole life, so maybe that's why I don't think it's that big of a deal.

Keep in mind you won't really be in Davis over summer unless you're doing Summer Sessions. Whenever it gets super hot the lecture halls are super cooled (sometimes i hafta put on a sweater). It'll definitely be different from SF weather, but you'll manage.
